16 year old JRT, time to say goodbye :-(

She's declined so rapidly I'm devastated.

Started with weakness in her back legs in spring time which steadily progressed to losing the ability to jump. She stayed comfortable over the summer however, and had her last holiday with us in July. Since then her legs have got steadily weaker until a few weeks ago she couldn't manage the stairs anymore.

Despite this she was still eating and drinking and still continent, still wanting a walk even though it was only to the end of our cul-de-sac and back. She still seemed interested in her usual life and liked a sniff and a bark outside albeit a very slow version so we didn't think it was quite her time yet. We started preparing ourselves though and had an appointment booked for next week as we thought it was coming but not quite time.

However in just 12hrs things have changed and over the course of the day she now can't walk or hold herself up and has stopped eating or drinking. Shes had a few treats and some rice. She's peacefully sleeping next to me right now but I'm phoning the vet in the morning to have her put to sleep as soon as possible.

I'm absolutely devastated for her. I thought we were going to do it before it got bad for her but I think we are now beyond that.

She's been my best friend for 16 and the best of dogs. I really wanted to get it right for her and I'm going to miss her little yappy self so much.

Flowers Run through anything the vet can recommend just for your peace of mind, but yes it sounds time. Then wallow in soppy rainbow bridge poems and be thankful you’ve had her and been such a wonderful owner. Take photos. Will the vet come out to you? Flowers
ILoveaSunflower · 29/08/2023 03:18

I'm hoping they can come over as she hates the vets so much. She shakes and looks terrified at vet appointments I always said I wouldn't take her there for her last moments but I would if I have to.
She's been on all sorts of meds over the last few months to try to treat the weakness and daily paracetamol.

Sounds strange to say but I look back on ddog’s last days with fondness. We cuddled her, fed her treats, even took her to the seaside. Glad the vet might be able to come to the house- ours couldn’t but gave us details of a vet who could.
Take care Flowers

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 29/08/2023 06:32

I’m so sorry. It’s so hard.
my old whippet had his last moments in the boot of our car parked around the side of the building. The vet and vet nurse came out to the car. I held him and said, “ are you off to chase some squirrels” and he was gone.

CobraChicken · 29/08/2023 06:41

I'm so sorry. It's so hard, but it sounds like she's had a great life, not suffered yet, and it's now it's her time.

I'm really dreading this with our own senior JRT who is 13.5yrs old now. His mother lived to 18 so I'm hoping he's inherited her genes...

MotherofWhippets81 · 29/08/2023 07:16

I'm so sorry.

The same happened with my greyhound. He was fine coping with his arthritis and then just suddenly went downhill.

It was during covid and I was so upset about the thought of them not letting me be with him that I called Dignipets. They will come to your house - I really recommend them they were wonderful with him.

The vet came to the house this afternoon and my girl went very peacefully and within seconds in my arms.
She spent the whole day cuddled in my lap but in the last hour before they came she was panting and starting to get distressed so it was definitely the right thing to do.
I'm in pieces now and my arms feel very empty.

Sorry for your loss.
it sounds like the right time for you both and the last kindness you could give.

MerryBeard · 29/08/2023 18:08

We had to say goodbye to our darling 14 year old JRT this morning. Like your dog she had been slowing down but happy for months, but this weekend she took a turn for the worse. Our vet was so kind and our dear old girl slipped away peacefully and gently in our arms.

She was tired and had enough and like your beloved dog things has become too much for her. Yesterday evening we took her to her favourite place and she had a little potter around, that will be a happy memory.

I take comfort that she's not in pain any more and that she, like your dog lived a wonderful life full of love. But oh my the emptiness, the love and care I still want to give her. Hugs from our house to yours.

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 29/08/2023 21:34

Sorry for your loss too @MerryBeard
lucky dogs to be so loved.

ILoveaSunflower · 29/08/2023 22:27

So sorry @MerryBeard they're such little troopers aren't they? The best dogs. Sending hugs your way too. Maybe they're chasing squirrels together tonight

I've been there many times OP, I understand the pain.

It's the last act of love to relieve them of their suffering, and thank goodness we can do this so they can go peacefully.

They are with us for so little time. Your dog had its life, it had come to the end, but it had its life with YOU.

That meant it was loved and cared for and never had to suffer cruelty.

It had a blessed life because of you.

Lots of love x

ILoveaSunflower · 29/08/2023 23:36

Thank you @EmilyBrontesGhost

I'm so sorry op. My little JRT was 20 when it was time for him to bpts. I was fortunate in that our vet could come to the house to do the injection so he died peacefully in his own home.

poduic · 30/08/2023 14:11

so sorry, op

MerryBeard · 30/08/2023 20:55

@HannahDefoesTrenchcoat and @ILoveaSunflower The thought that our dear dogs are somewhere beautiful chasing squirrels has given me such comfort. I like to think that.

Talapia · 31/08/2023 07:17

Sounds like your JRT had a wonderful life, and you were entirely in tune with her needs.
Take comfort in the fact that she was loved and knew she was loved.

I'm sorry for your loss, now is hard, but one day those wonderful memories of dogness will make the the pain ease.💐

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 31/08/2023 10:59

@MerryBeard

Poor squirrels 🐿😂

SunnieShine · 31/08/2023 11:07

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss.

But very pleased to hear your beloved dog was PTS at home in your arms.

That is what I did for my darling cat and it makes all the difference.

Your girl lived a life full of fun and love and you did right by her to the end x

ILoveaSunflower · 02/09/2023 00:34

@HannahDefoesTrenchcoat 🤣
The funny thing is she would chase them but never touch them.
A few times she cornered one but would then look like she didn't know what to do next and just used to slink off.

ILoveaSunflower · 02/09/2023 00:36

Hope you are doing ok @MerryBeard .
I had a chat with the vet today about what happened as I had so many questions surface afterwards. It really helped.
I washed all her bowls to put away and sobbed but I can't do her beds yet.

MerryBeard · 02/09/2023 16:50

Oh @ILoveaSunflower how kind of you to think of me when you are going through this nightmare yourself. We are bearing up but it is so very hard. Our lives were so entwined with hers and we still feel we have so much love and care to give her. We're missing her sparky little personality and funny ways.

We are exactly the same. Bowls washed and stored away but beds staying until we feel ready. My heart goes out to you and I'm so glad your conversation with the vet helped you. We are going through this together.

If our dear pup was ever in danger of getting near a squirrel she would take a wider turning circle so as not to catch it up. Funny little things they do that steal our hearts.

BasiliskStare · 02/09/2023 17:24

@ILoveaSunflower - so sad to read. I have a 15 , nearly 16 yr old year old Border terrier. His back legs are losing their muscles. He can get upstairs ( slowly ) downstairs harder for him. He is still eating and doing walks. His balance is going a bit. He has been for a checkup with the vet who said his legs will deteriorate but whilst walking / running on the flat & eating he is just old. This next may sound unkind but I do not mean it to , I hope when his time comes like your little one it is quick and obvious.

All best to you - what a sad time. 💐🐾

SauvignonBlanche · 02/09/2023 17:32

Sorry to hear that.😥
Our 16 year old JRT had a similar, really rapid decline.
I do miss her.

Billslills · 03/09/2023 07:50

Sorry to hear of yours and others very recent losses.

We said goodbye to our little terrier cross a few weeks ago. All his beds, water bowl, toys etc are still in the same place. There is no rush to do anything that doesn’t feel right. Everyone is different.

Please know you did get it right for her at the end. She was at home with her mum and it was quick and peaceful. Mine was the same but we were at the vets with our favourite vet who cried with me. It’s been a challenging few weeks but I take some comfort that the end was not the traumatic experience I had been so worried about.

Sending love and hugs to everyone.
