My dog is vomiting bile :( help

4 year old dog..always healthy.
Last friday she threw up bile first thing. We had just got back from a week away camping and I put it down to stress as she doesn't like being away from home. Was sick again Saturday.
Seemed fine in herself..eating, pooing normally. I rang the vets and they said just to give her an extra snack at bed time in case it's hunger pukes.
All well for a few days but yesterday and this morning she did it again.
Obviously it's the bank holiday monday and by sheer luck she has an appointment for her jabs on Tuesday so she will be seen then, but in the mean time can anyone advise anything I can do? She doesn't seem ill, but obviously somethings not right.
Should I feed her something, different (she's on Canagan kibble usually with a bit of ham or cheese sprinkled) or feed her more, less, what?!
Thanks!

Hi it may be pancreatitis so get her checked asap, our dog had this.

She should see the vet today. As PP said if it's not been solved by a snack before bed then I'd be concerned about pancreatitis.

Definitely don't give her anything like cheese and ham - it's really not good for them to have it regularly - and fatty foods like that are one of the main causes of pancreatitis unfortunately.

I meant to say, are you still giving her a snack before bed?

When we had this with our beagle the bedtime snack had to become a permanent fixture or he would be up vomiting bile at 4am.

My dog used to do this and a course of Omeprazole sorted him out. The vets charged us something extortionate like £25 for 7 x 10mg tablets and I realised they were the exact same ones as the human Omeprazole which I had had in the past so the next time he did it I just ordered from an online pharmacy for something like 80 tablets for £20.

It worked a treat. He was fine on the meds.

Our dog had this and the vets pissed around for weeks with wait and see, try feeding little and often to keep the stomach full (bile tends to come up with an empty stomach), try feeding late at night so not a long time without food, try Omeprazole.

When it didn't disappear by magic they started with blood tests and scans and found nothing. He started losing his appetite so we also tried painkillers for a while with the Omeprazole which was difficult to get him to swallow.

All the messing around and finding nothing ate into over £2.5k of our insurance. Eventually they referred us up to the vet hospital (had to wait 2 weeks for an appointment during which time it was costing more at local vets). £1.5k at the local hospital getting proper scans found the cause within a few hours (bad news unfortunately for us) the the local vets couldn't pinpoint in weeks.

In hindsight we should have pushed for the referral to get the proper tests and scans that the local vets couldn't do sooner as it was clear nothing was improving with their wait and see approach (it wouldn't have changed the outcome, but it could have been better managed) .

There are many more likely and less serious reasons they can be throwing up bile (I read about lots of them) so hopefully the local vets can sort it out quickly, but keep on top of them and in mind if they are not getting anywhere, or seem perplexed but keep taking your money, ask for the referral as soon as you feel it is necessary - you can always cancel during the wait time if they do get better.

Thank you for the replies. Unfortunately a vet visit isn't possible til next Tuesday as I'm 100 miles away with my unwell mum and my son is looking after her. He is a great dog carer but has autism, can't drive and certainly can't do the vets. She's not looking in any way distressed.. Just the morning bile.
He's going to give her a plain supper tonight and keep me updated.

It does sound like the hunger pukes. Try giving a bigger meal at bedtime (my little dog needs nearly a full meal) or can you feed earlier in the morning?

MeerkatsRule · 27/08/2023 01:30

My dog had this when he ate something he shouldn’t - a bit of his blanket. He puked several times until the material passed through him and then he was fine.

Hi
My dog does this fairly regularly (this morning for instance) and it is always because he is hungry. I do give a snack before bedtime which has cut it down a lot but it hasn't eliminated it completely. Always in the morning. I just wipe his mouth with a wet cloth and take him for a walk around the block and he then has his breakfast with no fuss. If I offer food straightaway after he vomits, he won't touch it.
If your dog seems generally well then I wouldn't worry. The first time I saw it I freaked out and took him to the vet who recommended he was admitted overnight. He had scans, x-rays of his digestive tract and it cost over £3k (luckily insured).
I would definitely feed a bit more throughout the day, maybe make the last big meal a bit later and then feed a decent snack at bedtime. I think if your dog has been very active recently then possibly they need a bit more. Obviously get her checked out if she has other symptoms like lethargy etc

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 27/08/2023 10:37

How's your dog doing today OP?

Sonolanona · 27/08/2023 10:55

No bile puke this morning! She had extra supper, and it was spaced out so she had a little top up at 9pm and then a handfull of biscuits at 11pm. (her 'proper' meals are usually about 8/9am after her morning walk and about 4.30/5pm after her big afternoon walk) It may be a fluke but hopefully not. I think we will redistribute her meals into 4 smaller ones a day fo a few days and see if that helps.
She's unlikely to have eaten something she shouldn't as she just doesn't (she's quite fussy and refuses strange treats let alone inedible things!) When she was being sick each time she sounded empty if that makes sense.. hollow tum noises.
Makes it a bit difficult to diet her (we were trying to lose the kilo she'd added since being spayed!) but if dieting her makes her puke.. she can keep the kilo (she's a medium large dog)
Also no cheese... going to get sad eyes for that one!!!
