Help with dog and painkiller

My dog had a tooth extracted today. He’s not eating or drinking which is fine - I get it!! But how do I get the painkiller into him? He’s majorly pissed off with me too so I’m feeling really bad!

Have you tried covering it in soft cheese or pâté before offering it to him?

If that doesn’t work, you’ll have to tilt his head back, open his mouth and pop it down the back of his throat. Then close his mouth and rub his throat while he swallows.

He won’t let me near his mouth and I’m worried about the stitches

Is it liquid medicine or a tablet? Our dog had mouth surgery recently and would not tolerate any liquid meds. We had to get tablets and use Royal Canin pill assist which moulds around the tablet. Dog will take anything with these.

It’s solid. I’ve tried coating it in favourite food and I’ve tried holding his mouth open but he runs away. I don’t want to distress him. He’s already refusing to look at me!

It's hard. Just after the surgery was worst for us, but our dog was so drowsy from the anaesthetic we left it until the following morning. Then she would lick food off the tablet but refuse to eat it! The pill assist things are a bit like play doh, so dog doesn't know the tablet is there, and obviously taste good. Good luck with it. Poor boy, hope he's not in too much pain 😟

Thanks. He seems ok but normally he would cuddle up to me if he is scared or needs comfort but now he is ignoring me! Hopefully he will fall asleep soon and feel better in the morning so I can get the painkiller in him

Well he slept all night and then woke this morning and devoured his breakfast so I put the painkiller in with it. He seems much better but his back legs are still a bit wobbly
