Dog eating shit and it's really affecting my relationship with her.

We've moved house ad she's obviously a bit stressed by this.

She's on a good quality food (Orijen true fresh)

She started eating her sisters poo and her own poo after the move.

I fed them both pineapple and it stopped but there are alot of cats in the area and they're shitting on my small garden.

I'm disabled so I can't get out quickly enough in the morning to do a cat poo check before I let them out for morning toilet.

And she's walking in chomping on shit.

It makes me feel sick to my stomach.

She came in this morning with it all round her lips. I was heaving and crying and now I just don't want her near me because she smells like shit.

She's a very licky small breed and it was never an issue before this started. Now she is licking everything an dits making me feel physically sick thinking about the poo in her mouth.

I know the only solution is to make sure there no poo in the garden before I let her out but it's difficult because if I leave them in the kitchen to go check they do their morning bathroom in there, then I have all that to clean up.

She also may be eating her own poo again because after a few days she started to refuse the pineapple.
Her sister eats it and her poops are left alone.

I have no problem picking up dog poo, I know that's a huge part of dog ownership but this is something completely different. It's absolutely vile and is making me not want to sit with her.

I don't know what to do with the situation.

Sorry OP but that description made me heave as well. Ugh. My dog used to eat horse poo but I have perfected the No! Roar which normally stops her. I am not dog behaviourist but I think the first thing I would do is buy a muzzle, even a fabric one and put that on her before she goes out so she can't eat it. At least til she settles down in new house.

Trevorton · 24/08/2023 11:55

This type of muzzle to prevent eating, available on prime so you can get it delivered by tomorrow

dothehokeycokey · 24/08/2023 11:56

Defo a soft muzzle to break the habit and a sharp no when she goes near it.

I go out late after they've been out and do poo check and pick up and again I go out with them in the first thing loo stop and watch them.

If mine goes anywhere near I firmly say no but as I've picked up the night before (head torch on) it stopped it.

My dog has done this since birth. He has got very clever now in his method. When he squats down he quickly puts his head inbeteeen his legs, under his tummy and back towards his bum under his body to catch a stray Roly poly shit that I might be too slow to pick up ! It's vile but I manage to stop him the majority of the time. I would suggest the muzzle if you are disabled though. Don't be upset it's really quite common amongst the dirty little buggers!

itsmyp4rty · 24/08/2023 13:19

Can't you just take them out on a lead to go toilet in the morning?

Wizzoh · 24/08/2023 13:57

The muzzle is a good idea but she's a pug cross so although she does have more muzzle than a full pug she's not got much of a face to fill it. It's worth a try though.

The lead is also a good idea but I think she would think we're going for walks and she has a big walk once a day with a walker. I might try it tomorrow morning though, she just gets so excited when her harness goes on, she would deffo think it was walkies time and go crazy.

I'm trying not to be graphic but it's really distressing, it's not like she swallows it and it's gone she chews 😭 and it's rwlaly making me not wnat to be near her and I NEVER thought I'd say that as she's absolutely my best friend and child almost!

I used to have a beagle that did this. I bought powder from vet and did the pineapple thing. Sprinkling dried chilli on the poo seemed to help most. I don't know what it is about cat poo 😂 agree a soft muzzle is likely to be the answer even if it just breaks the habit.

GodspeedJune · 24/08/2023 14:02

One of my dogs does this given the chance and I agree it is absolutely disgusting 🤮

I spoke to the vet about it incase it was a sign of deficiency and he said it’s ‘normal’ behaviour and in bygone times it was desirable for dogs to clean up like this 🤢

The only real solution I’ve found is to pick up every poo straight away. Appreciate this isn’t easy for you though. Could you install cat proof fencing to keep the cats out in the first place?

Konfetka · 24/08/2023 14:10

Try a remote control "puffer" collar. Keep an eagle eye on her and every time she puts her head down towards some poo give her a puff of air; it's unpleasant but not harmful to the dog. She'll think it's the poo doing it so it should only take a few puffs to break the habit altogether.

Newpeep · 24/08/2023 14:21

If you punish her she’ll just stop doing it with you there. She’ll still do it. Take her out on the lead or clear the garden. Management is the only way to sort this. May be stress so prevention now will pay dividends later.

Most dogs will eat cat poo. You can train a good leave but again it needs managing whilst you do this.

Wizzoh · 24/08/2023 15:39

Her sisters just done a shit INSIDE the house and started eating it, the non poo eater!

What fresh hell is this 😭

She must be copying her sister??!

My dog did this too, bought the tablets and he still wolfed it down.

I sat at the back door with him on a lead but with children in the house and a school/nursery run to get ready for it wasn't practical so he was muzzled when he went out.

Well, at least you didn't have to clean that one up op! Sorry I know it must be disgusting

Crzy · 24/08/2023 16:09

Although I would suggest a vet check for both and slightly increasing their meals as it can just be they’re hungrier for some reason if they suddenly begin eating for our ddog it was hypothyroidism that was making her more hungry and therefore going for poop suddenly and the issue was fixed with meds thankfully as she’s also very licky and my pregnant self couldn’t deal with the thought of that especially when suffering with hg Grin

Dalekjastninerels · 24/08/2023 16:14

Our family dog Jack (the Jack Russell) used to eat cow poo!

He wasn't allowed to lick our faces!

He was given to one of Dad's friends when we moved to Australia, as we didn't want to put him through months of quarantine.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 24/08/2023 16:23

The only way to prevent my beagle from eating poo is to restrict his access to it. His favourites are cat or sheep poo - we have three cats and live in the Lake District Hmm Grin

However, what stands out to me is that you say they'd toilet in the kitchen if you go out and check the garden before letting them out, and that one of them has just toileted in the house even with you there.

Are they not properly toilet trained?

They were before we moved. We've only been here 10 days and they seem very confused about where to go.

I think another issue is the tenant here before me had a large dog, so they can smell him/his wee in the garden too.

You need to go back to treating them like puppies if they don't understand where to go to the toilet in the new house, or they'll just keep going in the house.

Make sure you use a proper enzyme spray to clean up their accidents too.

Reallybadidea · 24/08/2023 16:31

You can get muzzles designed specifically for pugs.

I am, I'm trying but it's not easy when I am trying to unpack a whole house and settle my children in, during the holidays.

When I had a foster dog do this I started taking him out on a lead. When he'd poop I'd get him to leave it and walk to me, every single time he did, I'd throw a fucking party bouncing around celebrating. He loved our dance parties so much he forgot about his 💩 and eventually he completely stopped trying to eat it.

BeansOnToast32 · 24/08/2023 16:41

I'd honestly just take them out on a lead. One at a time so they can each poo in peace and you can immediately pick it up without any of them eating it, also stops them eating cat poo because you can just pull them away.

My pup loves cat poo it actually fills me with rage that I have to poo patrol for cat shit when I don't even have a cat. It's not in the garden often but you can guarantee the first time I don't patrol she will find some.

momager1 · 24/08/2023 16:45

our male standard poodle (not the one we have now, our old boy that we lost 4 years ago) was a poo gobbler until I could NOT take it anymore. The vile breath and always pushing him away when he wanted a cuddle. Our breeder told me to try pumpkin powder over his kibble and dilute with a chicken or beef bovril. It worked. Pumpkin powder is available at pet stores in Canada..not sure about UK..but you can used canned pumpkin if you cannot find powder. Powder is better . powder they do not taste going in..but it makes the poop taste horrible to them (I KNOW like seriously how can poop taste good to begin with lol)
