TMI I know but my dogs lady bits don’t look right all of a sudden - look like the are sticking out a bit. 11 month old not yet neutered golden retriever

Obviously will call vets, just worrying myself here.

It looks like her first season, mazel tov she's a lady now

Wolfiefan · 22/08/2023 23:13

On lead and away from all off lead dogs for three weeks.

Hopskiplou · 22/08/2023 23:13

Is this a joke OP? Keep her away from dogs for gods sake, if she’s a golden retriever or similar you’ll end up with 12 of her 😂

Haha no but thanks for making me feel like an idiot. Not actually owned a non spayed female before.

Walks well away from boys it is.

Sorry - worth reading up about seasons though, get some things in for bleeding and think about how to keep your bitch safe. Don’t risk it even for a second, the boys are persistent (actually the girls can be a pain too). I hired a secure field for mine and she was backing up to the chain link fencing at one point!!

to be fair, nobody told me it can be really messy, though many dogs aren’t. But you’re going to need a decent mop. And if she sleeps or goes in any carpeted rooms worth trying pads/pants and getting some supplies in for cleaning and protecting beds etc. Mine ruined a house viewing with one memorable and devastating shake of herself in the hallway. Viewers were on the doorstep too - not fun 😂 slowest and longest few weeks of my life.

HoppingPavlova · 22/08/2023 23:59

Why hasn’t she been spayed?

Why hasn’t she been spayed?

Not medically advised until about 18 months for large dogs.

Yep..she's coming into season.
Don't panic if she has a personality change. Some are extra loving, others get grumpy, depressed and withdrawn. Mine HATED all other dogs (inc her best friend) for the first few weeks, then was trying to get her butt near ANYTHING at week 3.
Not much bleeding in first seasons usually ( she may drip when she stands up) but beware... they are fertile when the bleeding slows/stops. Avoid everyone and walk her in quiet places ON lead! Their lady bits can look VERY swollen!!

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 23/08/2023 06:26

She needs be walked in isolated areas and on the lead for at least the next three weeks.

Wolfiefan · 23/08/2023 08:21

Don’t put pants on. It can be an infection risk.

Thanks - she’s recently had a uti hence my concern, so will avoid them.

Calm walks up abandoned forests for us then

Agree. We were OMG at our pups first too 😂 We’ve never had a bitch in season. You could see it from space.

On long line in isolated areas for the next 3-4 weeks and supervise in the garden. My pup didn’t bleed hardly at all.

Newpeep · 23/08/2023 16:02

Oh we were dreading it but it was fine. We are semi rural so just drive out of town and walked in deserted areas with harness and long line. Our pup is only 6Kg or so so if we saw a dog we picked her up but that was once or twice in a month. Ours is being spayed after her second season where she’ll be 18 months ish and through adolescence. That’s advised by our vet. So we’ve got another to go.

Wolfiefan · 23/08/2023 17:47

Worth looking to see if you can hire a secure field for her to have a run around. And remember to watch out for pyometra while she’s entire. She also might phantom after her season. One of mine did.
