Dogs lost some recall

Really frustrating! She was so perfect off a lead that you could take her in a field of sheep and she would just ignore them. Could of probably let her off (just to confirm I would NEVER do that just to present how good she was.)

She saw a squirrel a few weeks back, bombed after it and wouldn’t come back I had to go get her.

I’ve been extra precautious since then and only let her off where I’m certain nothing is around and she’s acted perfectly off lead,Otherwise she’s on a long lead. Again she is let off in a field my friend owns or where I know for a fact there’s no farm animals. I’ve also started doing recall training with her again, keeping her looking at me etc.

Today she saw a piece of rubbish flowing in the breeze and did the same thing again. She came back as soon as she realised it was useless but she didn’t come when I called.

She will be on a lead from now until I am certain she is going to recall perfectly again. I have another dog whose almost always on a lead because his hunting instinct is so strong I don’t trust him but because of how he behaves I wonder if he’s influenced her. There’s one enclosed field we go to where I can let them both go and he is a bugger to get back and she sees that.

Anyone have any tips or will she be on lead forever 😖

How old is she?

Azaeleasinbloom · 22/08/2023 20:30

How old is she ? Is she at that teenage -pushing the boundaries stage? Or is this an older dog?
Either way, back to basics, and take her out on her own for a while to practice if the other dog is a distraction . Lots and lots of practice, under all conditions.
High value treats , and personally I like a whistle over my voice- apparently I sound like I am asking them rather than issuing an instruction ( per gundog trainer 🙄)

Mine is 21 months and bogged off yesterday into a newly harvested field and wouldn't come out. Probably eating a mangled hare corpse. Recall was fine till a few months ago. I absolutely love him but sometimes it is more the "beating your head against a brick wall because it's lovely when you stop" sort of love.

Thanks for responses! She’s 17 months so probably going through that teenage stage! Great idea to take her out on her own again that’ll probably work wonders. Ooh! Never even thought of a whistle! Will defo give that a go.

Shes a border collie X lab so she’s very clever, energetic but she’s a lovely girl❤️ my other one is a beagle/working cocker . We love them both to death but can defo be a pain in the arse!

Sounds like my 14 month old springer, she's gone back to training lessons as her recall has vanished, I'm sure it's teenage years she's lost her off lead privileges for now!

Oh teenage arseholeness. Don't worry. Long line and lots of recall games
