Talk to me about boxers

I'm thinking of getting one at some point, probably early next year.

What are the pros and cons of boxers? We have two preschool age children, a chihuahua and a cat to consider

Might a boxer be suitable? Or if not, is there another breed for which we could offer a suitable home?

In addition to all the above, they drool. Lots. Lots and lot of slobber everywhere.

And, cos they love you, they wipe it all over you.

Fab dogs.

You need to start by looking at what you can offer a dog:

  • how many walks can you realistically do per day and for how long?
  • how much training can you commit to per day/week ie at home + formal classes
  • what type of holidays do you do eg in UK where you can take the dog or do you like to jet off twice a year so dog will need putting into kennels?
  • what is your home set up like, especially the size of your garden?
  • do you wfh or do you both leave to go to work all day, every day. If the latter then in my personal opinion you shouldn't even consider a dog

For first time dog owners I would avoid any working breed: spaniel, retriever, collie, weimaraner etc as they are all high energy and highly intelligent so need proper training etc.
Also avoid any of the "designer" breeds ie mongrels such as cockapoos/jackapoos etc aa these are top types for puppy farming and there is no control over the breeding practices hence the high number in rescue centres for behaviour issues.

Stop perpetuating the idea that dogs like cockapoos are ALL bred in puppy farms. There are reputable breeders for these so called designer breeds. You just need to do your research.

My trainer works with the police and RSPCA on rescuing dogs from puppy farms and then prosecuting puppy farmers. He says that 90% of dogs from puppy farms are cockapoos/poo crosses. It is NOT a myth and I will take his word over yours

There is a serious issue in the country with over breeding and poor breeding practices. The rise in mongrel inter-breeding stems from these poo-crosses.

Oh and these crosses are NOT breeds! They are mongrels.

Yeah, but to reiterate - not ALL cockapoos are bred illegally!

Of course not all, but a large % are. I never said ALL were bred by puppy farmers did I?

I use to have a boxer- we got her when I was about 5 and she was amazing! We must have lucky because she lived until she was 13 and had no health issues apart from the one sadly at the end. They are like pups constantly with the energy but they're so loving as well I'd have another in a heart beat if I had the time to spend with them x

I grew up with boxers from toddler age to early teens

They were amazing dogs they matched our energy as kids but I remember my mum doing loads of training with them and me and my younger brother.
they are very active and bouncy I would be slightly worried about an accident with a small breed as I remember ours accidentally hurting our rabbit by stepping on him

The first died when I was young but the second one I grew up with got epilepsy about 6 and had cancer about 7

Make sure you research the lines and get good insurance
