Cancel dog insurance when dog is old?

We have a much loved elderly dog who has never been ill- we have spent a fortune on unused dog insurance over the years (which I don't regret). His new annual insurance cost is £650 per year plus a big excess , + we would have to pay 25% of the bill.

However, now he is 14, if anything major happened we would have him put to sleep rather than subject him to invasive treatments or suffering. We are therefore thinking of cancelling his insurance, and just putting aside that amount just in case.

What would you do?

I thought about cancelling too for the same reasons for my elderly dog. However I’m glad I didn’t. As above he is now getting some pain relief for arthritis, which isn’t severe but vet says that a dog of his age, 15 year old lab, will have some pain. He also had a relatively minor cut which became infected and needed antibiotics. The costs of the consultations, medication etc. is adds up. I’m not saying not to cancel but don’t cancel just on the anything major argument as there are loads of minor ailments that can show up in an elderly dog that can easily be treated but could be expensive. The monthly medication for these minor issues for my dog is over £100 per month before consultation fees.

I'd agree. I've got an old pet and I just have basic insurance to cover the basics but a cap as I'd be in the same boat. If it started running into £000s then we'd probably say it's coming to end of his time with us.
