Dog let out to roam street to do business, but wandering onto roads.

Neighbours next door are leaving their dog to just roam around the streets nearby, no one is with it. It doesn't happen every day. I don't understand, as they have a back garden they can let the dog do it's business in.

Surely that can't be right? Any advice?

The man of the house is out working but he walks it before he leaves for work. He returns at around 3.

They have children, but surely the woman can either get ready and walk out with the dog or put it out in the garden?

One other local dog walker has also said she has concerns after witnessing the dog roaming around.

Does your area have a dog warden?

LubaLuca · 15/08/2023 12:59

Contact the council and see if they have a warden.

Vettrianofan · 15/08/2023 13:05

No, no dog warden in this area (cut backs). It's also a big safety issue as she's walking on roads.

Are you sure they're doing it deliberately?

We had issues last year with Amazon delivery opening our side gate to drop in parcels and accidentally letting the dogs out. Could be something similar?

I'd ask the neighbours and perhaps advise they get a new lock for the gate if needed.

YourNameGoesHere · 15/08/2023 13:09

Are they deliberately letting it roam or is it escaping the garden?

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 15/08/2023 14:27

Are you sure they're deliberately letting it out to roam?

We had problems with a dog up the roam getting out regularly, and it turns out there was an issue with their fence and the dog had figured out how to move the slats and get out. If they have children they could be forgetting the shut the gate while playing now it's summer break.

Obviously it's not very safe but I'm wondering why you're assuming it's intentional?

They don't have a gate.

This used to be a thing back in the day; letting your dog out like your neighbour to exercise itself. Utterly ridiculous back then, even more so now. If no warden then not sure where you can turn? Can you keep bringing back to your neighbour each time you see it?

Grimchmas · 15/08/2023 15:26

I remember a neighbour who let their dog out to exercise himself. It was weird and outdated when I was a child.

Recently had a different neighbour a few streets over start doing the same. It's a pain in the ass for a number of reasons because as well as the danger on the road, they're not seeing where the dog poos and cleaning it up, and are oblivious to the dog causing a nuisance to other dog walkers. Luckily for us it seems to have stopped - perhaps somebody said something.

The law is that you should be in control of your dog at all times in public. If no dog warden, try the police.

Justgonefishing · 15/08/2023 15:51

could ask the RSPCA in your area for advice?

Vettrianofan · 08/02/2024 20:25

Turns out there is a dog warden in the area after speaking with other dog walkers in my local area. Have reported after seeing the dog loose again today. It's been happening regularly since I first started this thread. Will be interesting to see if/when dog warden shows up...

We have a neighbour a street away who's dog is always out by itself! It is road savvy though but very strange to me. Owner does walk it too (always off lead) but it's out and about several times a week! The first time I saw it I approached it thinking it was a lost dog and he growled at me and ran back to his house!

Vettrianofan · 09/02/2024 15:02

Dog wardens showed up at their door this morning. Didn't realise that they are so fast at responding! Unfortunately the owner wasn't at home, noticed their car wasn't in the street. Do you think dog wardens return to speak to the owner or do they just post a note through the letterbox to explain why they have showed up at the door?

No idea! I would assume at least a note

Vettrianofan · 29/10/2024 07:04

Have had to report again 🙄

If he's at work, she just let's the dog out on it's own. Completely wrong. Hopefully the dog warden has a chat with them. I emailed about it so it's in writing. Poor dog could get hit by a car.

If it was me, I would try to get hold of the dog and then take it to our local cat & dog home as a stray. Feign ignorance and refuse to leave a name. They will scan it and let the owners know. If it becomes inconvenient to them to continue being irresponsible, they'll either stop doing this or allow it to be rehomed with someone who actually gives a shit. Poor thing.

bunnygeek · 29/10/2024 16:36

When someone local to me had their husky scaling the fence and taking herself on adventures regularly - I caught her twice and held on to her so I could physically hand her over to the dog warden. We didn't know which house she was coming from, just that she kept turning up jumping fences through neighbours gardens or running through traffic. They knew her well and it cost him £200 a time to spring her from the kennels. Not seen her for a couple of years now, hopefully he learned his lesson after spending so much money to get her back every time. So I'm with @MrsGhastlyCrumb, if the dog is out there's no reason you can't keep it safe (provided its friendly of course) and then hand it over to the dog warden.

Floralnomad · 29/10/2024 17:48

If it’s remotely convenient for you get hold of the dog and take it to the nearest vet and report as a stray , hopefully it will then go to the council kennels and the owners will have the bother of retrieving it + cost .
