Dog ate whole chicken carcass

Has anyone else's dog done this? Carcass had been cooked and then boiled for stock. He wolfed it down and became aggressive when I tried to go near him. He never protects his food.

No, mine have never eaten a chicken carcass, they don’t get the opportunity. Get vet advice asap as cooked bones can splinter and cause internal damage

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 10/08/2023 08:06

The vet won't be able to do very much as cooked bones can be dangerous to vomit back up again.

You'll need to keep a close eye on him - if you notice any signs of sickness or him struggling to poo then he needs to go in right away. Our vet also recommends bread to help the bones pass through the system.

Treelines · 10/08/2023 08:16

Thanks @cinnamonfrenchtoast - that's helpful. We'll give him some bread and keep an eye on him.

I'm sure he'll be fine - dogs are made of pretty sturdy stuff!

Just keep an eye - yes, cooked bones are a risk but not the point where I would massively panic if mine ate some, but then he is a bit of a walking dustbin Grin

My golden retriever puppy did this. DD and DH were at our kitchen counter taking the last meat off it when she lunged up between them and took it down in one, Jaws like, gulp.

She had the shits - brought on by the richness of the bone marrow apparently. But otherwise was fine.

Duchessofspace · 10/08/2023 08:22

My lab did this as a puppy - one gulp it was gone - vomited and crapped for about 2 hours and was fine

Treelines · 10/08/2023 08:25

@thelittlestkiwi - it isn't always owner negligence is it - especially when dogs are so opportunistic. Yes, he had it in a flash. Glad your pup was okay (and you didn't have a huge vet bill).

My last dog was a bone ninja! She would find them literally from nowhere when out and about. She was always fine. Our vets are quite blase about it as there is not much they can do. Just keep an eye on them.

SidekickSylvia · 10/08/2023 08:28

They'd do anything for chicken wouldn't they 😬. My spaniel grabbed a half eaten drumstick from my child's plate when we were in the garden. Never done anything like it before or since - he just kind of flew at it, and he was a puppy so we were worried sick. He was fine, no symptoms at all. Hope yours is okay too.

Treelines · 10/08/2023 08:29

Thanks everyone. Fingers crossed his street dog days will stand him in good stead for this!

My JRT are a lot of stolen bones, chicken or lamb, and he never had any issues. They are very sturdy breed.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 10/08/2023 08:32

My old lab cross did this years ago. I'd got it all wrapped up to chuck straight in the outside bin so she didn't get it and somehow she snaffled it in the minute before I took it out. She was fine other than an upset tummy for a while. I think she maybe did have something from the vet to soothe her tummy a bit (metacam?)

She was a dreadful food stealer and ate absolutely anything but otherwise the best dog ever - we lost her at 13 a few years ago.

whowhatwerewhy · 10/08/2023 08:41

Yup, turned my back and chicken carcass in dog . No side affects after .

Maddy70 · 10/08/2023 08:52

Mine ate the Christmas turkey carcass out of the bin. Just keep an eye on it. Mine was fine thankfully

FearTheWankingDead · 10/08/2023 09:01

My friends dog ate an entire chicken too. She also ate an entire box of chocolates. Plus loads of toys etc That’s just the things I can remember she ate, she’s alive and kicking at 14 now, she would still eat ANYTHING 😊

FelicityBeedle · 10/08/2023 09:03

Once they’ve been booked for stock I tend to find the bones are soft as butter anyway, so I wouldn’t be overly worried. Just keep an eye. Greedy bugger. Picture of offender?

thelittlestkiwi · 10/08/2023 09:09

@Treelines We're beginner dog owners. Had not expected her to be this bad. I've also had to remove a few decomposed seabird carcasses from her jaws. Luckily she is a softy.

Busubaba · 10/08/2023 09:13

My friends dog ate a roast chicken.

My friend had placed it in a corner in the countertop and the dog was unable to jump up and get it so it was a puzzlement as to how it ended up on the floor.

She places other plates of food in a similar position and kept a subtle watch and it was the cat who would push the plate near to the edge for the dog and the dog could pull it down!

RadishAndTwiglet · 10/08/2023 09:14

Keep a close eye on her, but honestly, don't panic and no need to rush to the vet unless he's obviously showing signs of being very unwell. The odds of it actually doing any damage are pretty small indeed and anyone who says differently has just been unlucky.

Treelines · 10/08/2023 11:10

@FelicityBeedle oh, go on then :)

Hopefully the fact he swallowed it down rather than had time to gnaw the bones are less likely to splinter. I would keep a very close eye on him and be prepared for any vomitting and/or diahrrhea today or through the night tonight. Dh would probably be sleeping downstairs with him if it happened with ours!

Any unusual behaviour, if he is aggressive again, might be related to pain and I would take him, out of hours if necessary, in for a check over.

Ostryga · 10/08/2023 11:33

Ah he’s gorgeous @Treelines as everyone else has said just keep an eye but should be fine.

My old spaniel once ate an entire block of butter, foil and all, and ended up having emergency surgery to remove the foil from his guts. Very expensive way to learn not to leave it on the side! He was obviously v unwell and in pain though.

FelicityBeedle · 10/08/2023 21:09

That is a very handsome gent, hope he’s still ok

Badgerandfox227 · 14/08/2023 04:02

Just wondering how ddog is doing?

Treelines · 17/08/2023 01:29

He was fine! No sickness, dodgy poo, change in behaviour. Thanks all.
