Poorly dog, holiday, what to do 😢

Hi all.

We have had a holiday booked for well over a year, it is a family one where we are all going abroad and an expensive once in a lifetime holiday. My dad passed a few years ago and this is like a coming together of us all.

Well today my mums little dog has become poorly, it’s unclear what’s wrong and finding out what’s wrong before holiday and making him better is unlikely. Holiday insurance does not cover things like this and after a completely shiz year my mum needs this holiday so much. She is saying she won’t be able to leave her doggy which I understand but has anyone experienced anything similar and what happened? What would you do? She is literally going through a mental breakdown right now worrying and I feel so helpless 😢 Obviously no family could help as we are all going away.

I don’t really know the point of this post but needed to offload thank you for reading xx

If my dog was really unwell then I wouldn't be able to leave him to go on holiday.

Her pet insurance may cover her needing to cancel her holiday if she's worried about finances.

My pet insurance covers £1,500 for holiday cancellation but I'm not sure what the threshold would be for them to pay up as in how ill the dog would have to be?

Where was the dog originally going to be staying while you were away? If a trusted person are they still able to have the dog and deal with any vet appointments? I understand your mum prob won't be able to relax and enjoy if the dog is very ill though.

Hi Op, I really feel for you and your mum, dogs are precious but so are lovely long awaited family holidays!
Who was having the dog whilst you were away? Do you have a dog loving friend who could step in and take it to the vets etc and keep your mum informed daily? Have you spoken at length with the vet to see if they can offer any solution or help? Could your mum come on just part of the holiday?
It's a really hard decision/ call for you all but share and discuss it with your family, the burden of choice shouldn't just be on you. Fingers crossed it works out for you all xx

When is the holiday? You might not be able to get full diagnosis but you should be able to get some info about whether it's anything big or not.

Floralnomad · 09/08/2023 21:12

I wouldn’t go on the holiday . Our dog was very ill earlier this year and we’ve done none of our usual trips as although he’s quite stable now I just can’t risk it .

Giraffapuses · 09/08/2023 21:14

So sorry this is happening. We would not go. We would just worry about the dog for the whole trip. If the dog died whilst we were away no holiday would be worth that.

BiteyShark · 09/08/2023 21:15

We had to cancel one of ours as he needed an emergency surgery. Lost the money as it was just outside of the time we could have claimed from our pet insurance when I read the T&Cs.

Azaeleasinbloom · 09/08/2023 21:20

That’s rotten. What were her plans regarding care of the dog? Was there a sitter or a kennel ? If the latter they probably wouldn’t take him
without diagnosis and vet advice.
But I would not want to go on holiday under such circumstance. I would not relax worrying about my dog.

He was staying with a lovely lady who always looks after him, I think mum feels it’s just too much to ask.

It’s on Sunday and it is a cruise. Charlie was due to be staying with a lovely lady who always has him and who he loves, but mum feels it’s just too much to ask.

Does she have dog insurance? If so, that may cover cancellation costs.

However, I would suggest you try and get an appointment as soon as possible to see what you might be facing.
It may just be a "bug" (there's lots of doggy sickness going round!) and with some meds and TLC would be fine.

knicknic · 09/08/2023 22:14

Thank you so much, I was feeling positive- Charlie seemed a bit better after the vet, he ate chicken, had a drink and even a play but now mum has got in such a state it’s rubbed of on me and I feel so so down and anxious

Oh thats good he has eaten and is feeling a bit better. Another 24 hours and he may be fine.
Of course the episode has made you anxious. That's because you care about your mum and the dog. Good luck, fingers crossed.
