Pet insurance

Which insurer do you use for your dog and would you recommend them?

We use Petplan but the renewal cost has jumped up hugely as we had to make a claim for an accident last year and they have added loads of exclusions - we are now not able to claim for anything to do with ears or skin disorders even though the accident was a cut leg!

So now want to consider another insurer. Happy to have one that makes you pay and you claim back as we keep a credit card for such expenses but we also want one that we can rely on that will pay out if we needed them to and it was a legitimate claim!

We had 2 dogs and when this happened to us we opened a separate building society account paid insurance money into that. Was amazing how quickly it mounted up. We could also use it for jabs and teeth etc that are not covered. It worked well for us

Gosh that seems so risky- the accident the dog had was pretty major and required general anaesthetic so I doubt a savings account would have covered that! Will have to shop around for quotes

Petplan really are one of the highest rated - it sounds like you had an annual rather than lifetime policy? Anything recorded in the clinical history, whether claimed for or not, will be excluded once the 12 months have passed. Bear in mind as you shop around now that those conditions will be considered pre existing.

Thanks. It's weird though as she definitely had no ear or skin problems. I may ring them and see if it was added accidentally

Agree with PP, this sounds like you might have had the 12 month policy (vs the lifetime policy)? In which case, exclusions are always going to be added.

Not trying to make you feel bad - just that it's worth knowing this so you can look for a lifetime policy next time.

I think ManyPets have one that allows prexisting conditions to (eventually) be rolled into coverage so long as you don't claim for them for 2 years.

I used compare the market when our insurance jumped up. We are now with Admiral, but our dog has no pre-existing conditions.
