Take your poo bags home!!

I live near a park where people walk their dogs. They walk past our garage and bins to get to the park. Every day they are slinging their poo bags into our bins, with the result that they are now attracting maggots and flies.

We have moved the bins so they are less easily accessible from the path. So now the dog walkers are making a deliberate detour and squeezing through a gap between car and fence to deposit their poo bags in out wheelie bins. We put a polite notice asking them not to, but it is ignored.

So my question is two-fold: why do (multiple) dog owners think it’s ok to fill my bin up with their dog shit and leave me to deal with the maggots, and what can I do to stop them. Thanks.

Amazon sell Bin locks. That should do it

Thank you wizzler, that’s a great idea. (As long as they don’t start leaving their shitty offerings on top the bin!)

I'd ask the Council to install a dog poo bin nearby. Your local Councillor might help.

You could install a camera in your drive too.

Can you get the bin into the garage? Or can you get it through a gate into a back garden?

Otherwise cameras, with warning signs.

people are unbelievably selfish - I’ve had this happen to me.

wlana · 07/08/2023 09:42

Or can you erect one of those bin housing structures that people have and lock it

Thank you for the good ideas. We did actually e-mail the council last week Siouxsie when we put the signs on the bins (sorry for drip-feed). Haven’t heard back though so I will chase them up.

I agree a council dog poo bin is the best solution. They know it’s a big dog walking route so need to cater accordingly. I actually like dogs and often say hello when they’re being walked round here…. just don’t want to deal with all the poo and flies, and I’m annoyed that the polite signs are being blatantly ignored.

There’s no back gate to keep them in the garden I’m afraid, and the garage is packed to the rafters already so although theoretically do-able this would involve an almighty clearance effort.

I’ll chase up the council and get some bin locks in the meantime. If that doesn’t work I’m going full surveillance camera to catch the poo bandit!

I’m confused. Surely it’s better for the bags to be put in the bin rather than left on the ground? I live in a place where others walk their dogs too, and don’t object to them putting their poo bags in my bin. I do object to those who throw their bags into the undergrowth on nearest bush. Id second contacting the council to get a DPB put in nearby though.
BTW, the best way to prevent maggots is to clean out the bin when its been emptied.

If you've contacted the Council already about putting in a Dog Poo Bin (and emptying it regularly) I'd google who your local Councillors are and see if you can get them to help you out.

why do (multiple) dog owners think it’s ok to fill my bin up with their dog shit and leave me to deal with the maggots, and what can I do to stop them.

Because they're lazy and can't be arsed carrying a poo bag around.

Don't get me started on the ones that just leave them in hedges, or as I've seen twice in the past week, trees.

There is a PhD waiting for someone who can do the research and work out why. Frankly, if they had a Novel Prize in human psychology...

Put one of those window alarms inside your bin, so that when the lid is lifted it goes off - that should deter them!

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Personal-Security-Window-Wireless-Burglar/dp/B08DD22GHM/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=Alarm+for+Window&qid=1691400527&sr=8-5

Oh please do this but install a camera with a decent image first so you can see them panic when the alarm goes off Grin
