Musings on the 'dog shaped hole'

I just read this column from last week's Sunday Times and - still having a dachshund-shaped hole in my life over a year on - it resonated. It may perhaps help those facing inane 'just a dog' comments. My feeling is that the connection to a beloved dog is visceral, they're our dependents while we are their combined goddess and slave.

We knew we didn't want to be without a dog so got a puppy when the older one started to slow down. The pair worked so well that we then didn't want puppy to be on her own, so we got dog no.3... and the original dog was still here for 7 years after he started to slow down! Dog no.2 is depressed and missing her big old friend, it's taken a few months but she looks sad these days.

When mine passes on I intend to have several big holidays before getting another. But I can’t imagine never having one again.

I had 3 dogs. One died and I still have a massive hole despite still having two. Its awful!
