Mini dachshund owners help please!

Absolutely gorgeous mini dachshund puppy arrived last weekend - nine weeks old! Gorgeous little boy.

I am arranging one to one training asap - have friends with this breed and know they can be quite stubborn and not the easiest to train. Already have two bigger dogs who pretty much trained themselves...

My question: how on earth do you get a mini dachshund to fall asleep and stay asleep anywhere other than on you? Getting into what I suspect is a bad habit of letting him fall asleep on me and then gently depositing him on his bed. Not sure this is feasible in the longer term and also worried that even letting him do this for a few days will establish a routine for life! Any help gratefully received. Didn't use crates for the two other dogs and would rather not for this little one but he is a very determined little soul...

No idea about sleep but please train it not to bark all day... Ndn have 1 and we are at our wit's end...

Read that was also an issue! Today he let out his first ever woof and looked quite surprised! We are in a detached house though so could be worse. One of my other dogs is a barker - we didn't deal with it properly when it started and now it is totally engrained which is why I am concerned about making sure this little one doesn't develop bad habits from the off!

This. Please do crate train - the one next door to us will bark in distress literally for hours if left home alone. It’s really not fair on the animal,

No idea but, but, but .... I'd absolutely love a mini daschund puppy falling asleep on me!
Good luck with training- I don't know anything about the breed behaviour.

We are 10 months in with our mini dax. She slept on me all the time at first, now she will happily sleep in her bed or on the sofa. I wfh a lot, when she was first home she would sleep on my feet under my desk. I'm absolutely besotted with her, sleeping on me as a pup hasn't caused us any issues. At night she sleeps in her bed at the side of our bed, this took a few weeks of training but she sleeps like an Angel now. Good luck!

Ok so maybe I need to be less hysterical about the falling asleep on me thing...but how did you manage to get yours to sleep next to the bed? I manage for a while but then when we get up to go to loo he is very whiney and I end up giving in and he comes on the bed. He then wants to burrow down into the duvet and curl up against DH's bum - which is a bit of a squash risk!

We have a 3 year old mini dachshund. When we first got her she was obsessive about always being on our laps and she still is to a certain degree, but she very happily sleeps in her own bed in the kitchen all night long, and has done since she was a tiny puppy.

We don't have her in our bedroom to sleep because if she's near us, she wants to be on us! Is putting her bed in another room not an option? We have a nice routine now where one of us always brings her up to our room for morning cuddles in our bed. I can't believe I'm typing that. I would never have believed I'd be that person! Crazy what dogs do to you.

We got ours a snuggle sack which is like a sleeping bag for dogs. She loves it. We put it in a normal dog bed and she burrows in. You can get them on Etsy for about 30 quid.

Good luck with the training! I found it pretty challenging but she's my first dog. You might find it easier. They're wilful but they're also sensitive little souls. We adore ours!

Honestly it took a few weeks of just being firm at night. She would whine and try to get on the bed but I just kept putting her back in her bed and slept so she could see me. Right now she's cuddled on the sofa next to me but I'll go to bed soon and she'll settle in her bed. She fractured her leg a couple of weeks after we got her and spent 6 weeks on strict crate rest. That was hell and she whined so much at first. I think sleeping next to us out of the crate felt like a luxury after that.
