Anyone ever experienced obession when introducing a new puppy?

We got a baby Chi yesterday. Our existing Chi is obsessed.

She's displaying no signs of wanting to play but also no aggression. She is simply circling and sniffing the puppy constantly. He's been with us almost 24 hours now and she hasn't stopped. We've had to separate them so they can both sleep.

I've introduced loads of new dogs to an existing "pack" (I used to foster) and I've never experienced this before. The sniffing stage usually only lasts an hour or so and then they move to playing or simply getting on with life as normal. I know it can take months to fully settle in a new dog and for them to bond but this obsessive sniffing doesn't seem normal and I'm not entirely sure what to make of it or how to help the existing Chi settle around the puppy.

Obligatory puppy pic attached.

I'm no expert, but I would keep interactions brief, they get all the info they really need from 2 seconds of sniffing (that's what I was told for my reactive Chi who we're working with at the moment and can get intense with her sniffing).

Then keep separated and maybe do a bit of blanket swapping as well.

Does your older dog play with toys? If yes, I would just instigate some carefully supervised play between the 2 dogs.

I wonder if obsessive sniffing is a Chi thing? It's not something I've ever experienced in other breeds.

She does like to try to play tug with our bigger dog, so introducing a tug toy and trying to instigate play is a good call. Thanks.

We will try to keep meetings shorter.

Answer is she's a chihuahua, they are little freaks of nature, I have three and adore them but honestly they are all slightly mad in one way or another 🤣 do not expect normal dog behaviour really .
And your puppy is gorgeous, am jealous!

Introducing a toy worked. They're playing bitey face now.

I did think I had fixed them yesterday but now the existing Chi has decided she can only eat her meals if she is spoon-fed so I am inclined to agree with you. They are not normal dogs. In fact, they are not dogs at all. They are strange hybrid cats sent from an alien planet to try to overthrow humanity.
