Is my dog angry with me?

I live by myself with my dog.

We've never had much of a routine just because I've had so many different jobs, working different hours, but she's always had a walk in the morning and another later at various times, usually me or a dog walker if I couldn't. Despite this she's always been good as gold toilet-wise. Never poos in the garden always waits for her walk. Only had one or two accidents since being weaned and only when she was poorly.

I've had her since she was a few days old (dam rejection and I was meant to give her back to her breeder but I fell in love with her after hand-rearing and bought her myself).

Last weekend my friend stayed and brought her two dogs with her. She slept in my bedroom, I took the spare room. My dog never sleeps upstairs of a night, I'm not against dogs in bedrooms but she's just never wanted to-always sleeps downstairs in her bed (I think due to having 'guard dog' tendencies).

So my friend was in my usual bedroom with her two dogs in there with her while she stayed. Her dogs are used to being in her bedroom with her.

All seemed fine. Dogs know one another already.

Early this morning my dog was barking for me to let her out. This normally doesn't happen-she usually will just be let out when I wake up, however It's happened once or twice so I thought nothing of it, let her out into the garden, left the door open for her and went back to bed.

When I actually arose about two hours later, found that dog had pooed in the garden. Unusual, but no big deal. I figured she must have just really needed to go for some reason. She was also unusually clingy with me, followed me into the kitchen while I made coffee, very closely, all attention on me-not usual for her, she normally just lazes about until It's time to walk. I picked poo up, and went in the shower. Came out of the shower and dog had pooed on my bedroom floor!!!

Ugh-but also, why just why? The back door was open so she could have gone in the garden. She can't have been desperate to go anyway as she'd just been. Without going into too much detail she didn't appear to have an upset stomach or it being a two second warning-why my bedroom?!

I saw a friend this morning who says she's annoyed with me because I've let two other dogs sleep in my bedroom?

All seems fine now. Any ideas? Something I need to keep an eye on? Not something I'll be okay with happening regularly-I know dogs have accidents but she's never done anything like this before!

If she was barking to go out and then pooped on the garden, when she wouldn’t usually, I’d be thinking she wasn’t very well. Going in the bedroom might also have been a case of urgency. Had she eaten the other dogs food or been fed titbits or anything? I really don’t think she crapped on your floor in a show of annoyance.

I'm not sure if anger is the right description, but out of routine etc might be closer to the mark.

A few years ago my neighbours had a perfectly nice dog that mine hated simply because he's a territorial git. Unfortunately their dog died very suddenly in tragic circumstances. About 3 days after that happened, my impeccably house trained dog waltzed through their front door and did a shit on their living room carpet. He hadn't had an accident for several years before that, and not once since then. It was 100% deliberate! The neighbours were very nice about it ("it was quite firm..." they told me the next day)

WarmButteryCrumpets · 01/08/2023 15:48

I world have thought it's a territorial thing, she maybe felt ousted from a room she considers hers and needed to reclaim it?

CinnamonBunAndCoffee · 01/08/2023 15:53

Last week we had a string of strangers come into the house and do some quotes. Since then our dog has taken to peeing on the floor near where the workmen sat. Our dog is quite territorial, I think it’s to mark his territory again! Probably similar with your dog.

Doggydarling · 01/08/2023 16:02

I've two small dogs that live indoors with full (Doggy door) access to outside, I've also got two working dogs that sleep in a large purpose built shed c/w thermostat controlled heating, piped radio and outdoor access, all dogs are toilet trained but one of the small ones will pee in the house if either of the bigger ones spend time inside, they're territorial and letting us know. I wouldn't be having other dogs to stay if it causes this much upset.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, seems the general consensus is 'This is MY room!' nevermind that I very seldom go in it so I need to make sure you know it by leaving a huge smelly pile of 💩on the floor. She's not had anything unusual to eat, nor does she seem ill. She's been fine since.

I really hope she doesn't do it again-I didn't tell her off or anything as I guess if it IS down to her being upset about the dogs being present, that will not have helped.

No she is not angry with you.

If she is not ill then I would say she is stressed having the dogs in the house.

She has not pooed in protest!

Agree with above.

Dogs don't tend to hold grudges and poo on the floor because they're annoyed with you.

She's had 2 dogs come into her home. I imagine she's been stressed and upset by that. Regardless of how well she knows them, they have invaded her territory and her behaviour showing that she's stressed.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 01/08/2023 21:01

Dogs don't have the capacity to get angry with us in that respect. I know it's easy to interpret her behaviour as a strop or tantrum though.

If she's not unwell, then it sounds like she's stressed - lots of dogs don't like sharing their space with other dogs, no matter how well they get along or how well they know each other.

Stress can often show in things like inappropriate toileting, an upset stomach, excess grooming, a change in eating habits and a general change in behaviour.

Spanielsarepainless · 02/08/2023 10:20

Dogs don't think like that. Your dog is stressed.

dawngreen · 08/12/2023 20:46

Sounds like she is unsure of the strange dogs in her area's. Marking her area/scared.

Shannith · 08/12/2023 20:58

As everyone has said - don't anamorphosise dogs.

She's not angry, or holding a grudge, or teaching you a lesson. That's what humans do.

But she has been unsettled, her routine altered and is showing her stress through this behaviour.

It's quite usual and should settle down.

dawngreen · 09/12/2023 15:37

Don't let other dogs mess with her food bowls or toys. Pick them up to stop any fights.

This is an old thread that has been bumped but I still do appreciate people's responses. She's not done it since so all is well, I just found it very puzzling!
