As the title says we have a lovely little male dachshund who is 10 months old and for the past week he's been humping anyone who walks in the door including my 11 year old son soon as he sits on the sofa! My vet has said with dachshunds they recommend getting them done at 2 years old but this whole humping is driving my mad!! How can I get him to stop thank you for any advice

Humping isn't (always) a sexual behaviour, and neutering isn't a magic bullet.

Indeed, my 7yo dachshund cross was neutered (too) young, at least 6 years ago, by a previous owner, and will still hump - in his case it's usually when he's feeling a bit anxious, and sometimes as part of play with other dogs.

I agree with PP.
Take a look at www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fvets.2020.00388/full

Early neutering increases the risk of IVDD in Dachshunds.

I'd work on burning off energy and reducing anxiety with training, brain games, lots of exercise etc

He gets one hour walk in the morning and then a 30 minute walk around dinner time then about 5pm he has another hour walk plenty of room in the garden too which we spend majority of our day outdoors with him, I've also noticed he keeps cocking his leg up in the house even if he's just been out for a walk or in the garden the back door to the garden is always open so he can come in and out as he please that's only been happening past week too, Im going to look into more of how to distract him when though thank you both

I treat it like mouthing tbh, interrupt it, distract them and check they’re not overstimulated in general, quick time out if they’re really persistent. They grow out of it IME.

My eldest dog was a wee humpy nightmare for a few months, people and dogs, he’s nearly 3 now and I honestly can’t remember the last time he did it to a person and he very very occasionally will think about it with a dog, but as soon as I say off he just stops.

This thread prompted me to book my ten month old male Chihuahua in at the vet for neutering for the exact same reasons as you OP. I am fed up of him lifting his leg in the house. He does it on my pugs when they are weeing and he also lifts his leg on people when I stop to talk on our walks. The other day we were enjoying our walk when he ran over to someone's sports bag and did it on that.
Not only does he do this but he tries to run away from home and believe me he can squeeze through a hairline crack in our fence.
Balls off on 8th August. That should put an end to his activities😜

@Softoprider oh god 🤣 I feel you I really do I'm glad you've got yours booked in weve ripped up all the carpet and had to put hardwood floor down to see will that help him stop marking in the house!
