Sorry I posted too soon.

My 13yr old Patterdale terrier is being treated for pancreatitis by the vet. She was given iv fluids 3 days ago and was sent home with paracetamol and omeprazole . She was recovering and eating the RC low fat wet food. Her first night home she seemed to be in a lot of discomfort so the vet gave me some stronger pain meds Buprenorphine 0.1mg Orodispersible (100) however she started to do much better so I decided to hold back on giving her any. She now has severe vomiting and diarrhoea and is shaking. I think she is having a lot of pain again too. Do you think it would be ok to give her one of these pills now. The vet doesn’t open for another 4 hours. Because she has been so sick I’m not sure she will be able to hold it down anyway. Thanks

Hi I have no vet training but my shitzu-Maltese gets chronic pancreatitis and the pain is dreadful. If you can get a pain med down your dog's throat now I would do it, then take dog to the vet as soon as they open.
My dog has been put on a drip overnight several times and is on a special low fat food. He's also fed steamed veggies each day.
I hope your dog recovers OK.
But yes I'd give pain med ASAP.

Is there an out of hours emergency vets near you that you could phone for advice until yours opens?

I can understand getting the pain meds into her but if she’s going to vomit it back up there may be no point.

I would try pain med if it's possible - it sounds like your dog might need to go back on a trip with antibiotics and pain meds at the vet - mine has had to do this on several occasions - he's always recovered OK,. I have usually managed to get a pain med into him first, but if it's close to vet's opening times just get him/her there at opening time as they can give him immediate pain relief there.

These attacks are horrible - but mine has lived for 12 years well and contented - just the rare attack that seems to settle Ok after time spent on a drip - your dog will be dehydrated.

Once doggie has recovered I would suggest vegetables with the diet - mine gets sweet potato, carrots and broccoli steamed in the microwave every day. Mine is also on a Hills Science Diet for food sensitivites.

It all costs a heap - but the reward is a happy well dog. Good luck and let us know how you get on with the vet. It's miserable for your poor dog and stressful for you.

Thank you for answering my post. I gave her the medication and it seemed to ease the pain. However she started to bleed from her bottom. Got her to the vet when they opened. They have kept her in to put her on a drip and to do tests to establish what exactly has caused it. Vet thinks it could be a viral infection. Just have to wait now. It’s so hard to watch them suffer and not be able to tell you how they are feeling

HI, I m glad you got your dog to the vet ok - my beloved old dog had an awful gastro a while back with bleeding from the bowel and vomiting at the same time, it makes the poor dog weak so fast, so I'm glad they've got him/her (sorry, this is from my phone and I can't check back to remind myself whether your dog is boy or girl) - on a drip. It's amazing how fast they can pick up once they're hydrated again, so hopefully by tomorrow doggy will be much improved!

I'm in Australia so I am on a different time zone completely if you are in the UK, but I will check in again tomorrow, I'd like to hear how you are getting on.
I know how worrying it is when our much loved pets get sick. When Sam, my little guy, was overnight at the vet the house seemed very empty (I live alone). It's amazing the difference having a companion animal around makes! Dogs are wonderful.

So glad if I've been able to give you some support.
Do update us tomorrow on how doggo is! I'd really like to hear. Best wishes! πŸ™‚πŸΎ

My girl was diagnosed with pancreatitis shortly after we got her. (Rescue). We are really strict with her food. She was on Hills but hated it & was losing weight.

With the vets help we got her on low fat tails dry. She’s now on regular tails but as soon as we deviate she has a flare.

She has a carrot daily & low fat fish treats 1x day (woofs cod cubes or cod crunchers) she has freshly boiled chicken that I air dry as training treats.

I hope you get some answers. It’s so tough to see them unwell :(((

Hi again - the other thing the vet here put my dog on is a regular probiotic - Pro-Kolin - it's a paste that goes on his food at every meal. That and the regular veggies seem to have kept him well so far. It's a pest of a problem. I hope doggo is doing better after being on the drip.'
They discovered my dog was allergic to any protein that was used in commercial dog foods - we tried kangaroo for a while - when that didn't work we now use the Hills Science where the protein molecules are disguised somehow. My poor dog hates it, but it keeps him well!
It seems to be a case of trial and error - different things seem to work for different dogs. Good luck, I hope all is well today for you.

Update.
Pippin is home after 3 nights at the vet on supportive treatment for hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. She was a very sick wee dog. I can't believe she is home.
She is very tired now and has slept mostly still not back to herself. She has to eat a very plain diet. Only interested in cooked chicken at the moment. She has stage one renal failure too so I will need to slowly transition her to her renal food. Thanks for all your concern.

Oh bless her. And how are you feeling? It’s so worrying when they are unwell. My girl has to be hand fed when not herself.
