Dog VERY quiet after minor vet procedure...normal?

I rushed my treasured 13yo staffy to the vet this morning after his bum swelled up like a balloon in the 24hrs prior - he wouldn't eat, couldn't poo apart from small amounts of diarrhoea and couldn't even wag his tail properly.

Vet found an ENORMOUS abscess which had spread from his right anal gland all the way up and around his side. He had to burst and drain it in 2 places (DDog was a trooper and they did it all with local anaesthetic) and sent me home with a high dose antibiotic and instructions to give human paracetamol 3 times a day.

He is SO quiet this afternoon, doesn't want to eat or drink or go for his walk. He's also a bit wobbly and unbalanced. I could understand after a general anaesthetic but as I said they did it with local.

Anyone had a similar experience? Is this normal? Should I wait till tomorrow morning and see if he's brighter?

He's currently laying on various towels or blankets as the vet said to expect the abscess to continue bleeding and draining for a couple of days.

It's understandable after that procedure. Can I give some advice . Buy a large toddler baby grow and take the cone of shame off him . They make them very depressed . When our little dog was spayed we refused to put a cone on her she could move about better in a baby grow and she still couldn't kick the wound.

Sorry "lick"🤣

Oh that's a great idea - would never have thought of that! I've actually taken it off for a bit because he's not worrying at the wound or anything.

But that's a fab idea if I've got to pop out or whatever, trying not to leave him the first couple of days.

Good to know it's normal for him to be quiet though, guess I would be too if I'd been stabbed up the botty 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Awww bless him ❤️. If you buy a couple you can rotate them for washing . He'll probably be much happier 🙂

Oh my goodness, what an adorable old boy. Poor love, he's been through a lot.

You've probably thought of this, but could you give the vet a call to ask if he's doing ok as he is? Our vet has an out of office number and they've given me free advice and put my mind at rest on several occasions. Hope your dear lad is much better soon.

Oh bless his cotton socks he's been through the mill. He's probably feeling sore even with the paracetamol.
We got a soft buster collar for ours when post-op as it's not as jaggy if they bump into things. Although I like the babygro idea and will store that for next time!
