She was fine this morning. Running and playing as usual. I was working so wasn’t paying too much attention, she was out in the garden chasing birds and being an arse as usual. The next thing I knew she wouldn’t weight bare on her back leg. Made her rest, popped out and came back hoping the rest would have helped. It hadn’t.
Took her to the vets at 18:30 and vet suspected the same as me, cruciate ligament. We’ve got to go back tomorrow morning to see the orthopaedic surgeon for confirmation. I don’t know what to do.
She’ll be 9 in November, has always had both hip and elbow dysplasia, and had a bilateral arthroscopy when she was about 18 months old. She’s been on painkillers for probably 3 years ish now and now I’ve written it all down, it sounds like a no brainer, but she’s so bloody tenacious she’s still running around like a looney and doesn’t really seem phased by being 3 legged!
Any advice from anyone who’s been through similar much appreciated. The money isn’t really an issue, as in I can get it, but weighing that up against her quality of life is a tough one.

Cruciate injuries can be repaired, it’s a fairly long recovery though.

Not all cruciate injuries require surgery, my dog recently tore his cruciate and the vet reckons it will repair itself.
I think it depends on the extend of the tear.

Cruciate tears are not a life or death matter , they can be repaired . Hope your dog feels better soon

Your ddog will milk every moment of recovery.. You will face more suffering imo...
In ££ and lack of sleep due to nursing.

Thanks for this. I do understand it’s not life or death and surgery may be an option, but how much painful surgery and even more painful recovery do I put her through? She is not good at resting.

The recovery is long but should not be painful after the initial few days after the op.

She could probably be walking on all 4 legs days after the surgery - mine was walking fine the next day.

The hardest part is keeping a dog that feels fine calm but it is very doable

Her quality of life will be back to normal after a few weeks.

Is she a large dog?

Trinity69 · 28/07/2023 21:26

She’s about 20kg and as mad as a box of frogs. 🤣
