Alternative to cone of shame?

My fur baby is being spayed soon and I wondered about alternatives to the cone. I've seen soft donut style collars, not keen on a clothing item unless they're a definite help!

Any other tips? She doesn't go upstairs anyway but does love to sleep on the sofa...

Our lab was sent home in a surgical suit after her spay. She didn't like it but would have hated a cone or inflatable collar more.

We have the blow up donut style and it has helped both of our boys, more comfortable to sleep in etc.

We had a onesie for ddog. Was a pain when she needed a wee but stopped her licking her wound. It healed perfectly

Mine has been modelling the doughnut of dispair (blow up collar) for the past week and will be for another two. The cone of shame is off before she even leaves the vets room. If you go for a blow up collar think if you can wipe clean the outside. old girl when spayed wore a teenagers t shirt that I stitched Velcro to to fasten around her. TBH the first two nights post spay we slept downstairs with her .

We had a surgical vest from the vet when mine was spayed. We had to undo the poppers whenever she needed the loo, but other than that it was fab.

She’s just had TPLO surgery and we had to have a cone. Bloody nightmare. I had to keep rescuing her as she kept getting it trapped. She couldn’t work out that if it caught on the ground she could just lift her head. My shins will never be the same again 😂

Our youngest dog was spayed recently and had a dog vest thing. It was great and we could pull it up when we let her out … until she worked out how to undo it! But by that time her wound had more or less healed so we let her take the vest off whilst we were around. We did let her have some gentle exercise off lead in our garden despite being told to keep her on a lead which helped her (along with lots of training/mental work) with the boredom. Her wound has healed brilliantly.

To add to what another poster said, one of us slept downstairs with just Dog 3 in the living room, for the first few nights.

Mine both have the donuts of doom. They work well, nice and soft to sleep on and not to bad when you get battered on the legs!

We had a surgical onesie for my dog when he had his nuts off. He wouldn't have liked a cone and the suit was a good alternative.

afaloren · 28/07/2023 11:48

We use the inflatable kind. They can sleep on it like a pillow and it doesn’t get in the way of eating or drinking.

Floralnomad · 28/07/2023 19:03

The suits are by far the best solution , my dog has spent many a night in one of his suits .

dogsweetdog · 28/07/2023 19:44

We've had a surgical suit when ours have been spayed and it's brilliant. Saying that it wasn't warm weather at the time, if it was hot I probably wouldn't have used one, I'd get an inflatable collar.

FlutteryButterfly · 28/07/2023 19:55

The inflatable collars (doughnuts of doom) don't work on my DDog as she can still reach her wound site. Would be OK if it was head or just behind shoulders but she can still get to her mid/rear section and tail. Assume they only work on certain breed/size of dog. Border Collie here.

Hillcrest2022 · 28/07/2023 21:25

I alternated surgical suits as and when they needed a wash. She did matt though and I had to wait a while to have her groomed after the op and then she needed a fairly short cut to rid them but otherwise it seemed the best option.

Nugg · 29/07/2023 12:00

Oh well a donut of doom 😂 and suit combo is clearly the future - thank you! Last dog I had spayed was about 20 years ago as they've been rescued ever since but my rescue pup now has her turn.

I definitely intend to sleep downstairs with her as she never goes upstairs anyway. Did wen she had kennel cough too lol!!

Many thanks 😊
