Does anyone have a chow chow?

We are considering this breed. My husband has owned three in the past, his last one died the year before we got together, so he's an experienced owner who knows the breed very well.

I love the look of them and am aware they're aloof as a breed and also they're a guard dog - I've never owned one before though

So my question is to those who have one .. just wanted to know your experiences Smile

@travelmad lovely story and great photo! She looks lovely

And yes - the Eurasier could be a contender!

My list has lengthened.

Chow chow
Long haired sausage
Eurasier
Tibetan terrier

I love all dogs tbh and I love different things about them and that's why I know there's a big difference between a sausage and a chow!

I would never have a greyhound type dog or a staffie or anything remotely bull type - they just don't appeal to me to own one.

This is mine last one in full coat!
She loved being brushed and was a very chilled dog (for the breed!)

@Ylvamoon oh she's adorable!

I used to love Auntie Mabel and Pippin! Remember that?

In my home country they are on the list for higher homeowners insurance/some won't cover.

@PlainJanePerfect luckily I don't live where you do then Smile I note that Great Danes and German shepherds are also restricted so that's a shame

Indeed! Although worth checking if the UK has any restrictions. I live here now but it's just cats for us these days.

The breeds are selected by actuaries based on frequency/ severity/ cost implications of incidents. I'm surprised what's on there tbh. We had an Akita mix when I was growing up and he was a lovey teddy bear.

Get the wire dachshund!
They are the best!
Also stubborn but love you to bits!
And if you want a booger version get the standard 😊

Have a look at Eurasiers as another poster has mentioned.
They have the fabulous looks but fewer issues.
Mine isn't stubborn, she's generally quite obedient , absolutely amazing with my toddler grandson.
They are 'my family only' dogs but not such 'one person' dogs. Mine mostly ignores other dogs although she is scared of a couple of breeds. She's happy to have a good walk unless it's raining, and then she does her business and asks to go home but she's never refused to move :)

She's also goofy, and absolutely soppy with us. Aloof to strangers, but happily goes out with the dog walker when I'm working. Perfect in the house,.. no chewing, toilet trained by 10 weeks old. She takes time to accept new people but once she has she loves them forever.
Sort of a 'Chow -light' version as the more difficult characteristics have been bred out.

Biggest pain is picking out sticky weed balls from her coat at this time of year Grin

The Eurasier Society is a good place to have a read/look!

My parents had a Chow Chow before I was born and he was oldish when I was a young child.

He died when I was five and I remember him as being a big teddy bear. He was very patient and not very energetic perhaps because of his age.

We were a horsey family and my memory of him was that he always wanted to be near us but content to lay nearby and just watch.

He was a very contented dog and nothing phased him.
