Guess the breed(s)

I've always been curious as to what breed(s) my dog is. The rescue described him as a Rottweiler/Hound cross but did also tell me that was a guess and they could not guarantee his final size or breed mixes.

He came from Spain and was found abandoned on the edge of a farm as a very young pup.

Breeds that have been suggested are Beagle, Rott, Pitbull, Doberman, Coonhound, and Burnese Mountain. I can see Beagle and Coonhound, I'm not convinced about the others.

He weighs 25kg and is slightly taller than a lab (he's also a lot heavier than he looks). His bark deafening. Temperament wise he is bouncy, silly, and thinks the entire world is his best friend. He is definitely some type of hound and displays the typical nose turns on, ears turn off behavior of hounds on his walks.

Huntaway maybe? Looks similar and they're known for their loud bark!

tootiredtobother · 26/07/2023 18:53

Huntaway, my brothers is useless rounding up cattle so my bro still has to HAHA

Oooh, that looks very close to him. The one pictured on Wiki is the double of him. I've never seen him try to herd anything but he was found on a farm so could have come from an unwanted litter of herding pups.

I'd love to DNA test him but he would probably eat the swab. He ate wallpaper paste once. It took me ages to convince the vet that no, he did not lick it and decided it was not food. He stuck his head in the container and kept eating until I jumped off the step ladder and took it away from him Hmm

Huntaway, for sure. I walk one occasionally - he is absolutely batshit bonkers Grin

Frequency · 26/07/2023 19:10

Batshit Bonkers is a very good description of him. We always prewarn guests that no, he is not like the big boucy dog their Uncle has. He is worse. Much much worse. However bouncy they imagine him to be, he is worse. No-one listens. They still invite him off his mat to greet them.

I have successfully taught him to go to his mat and stay there until he is invited to greet people. He refuses to learn not to maul people with love. Guests always regret asking him to greet them.

Definitely sounds like a Huntaway!

The one I walk is just over one now - when he's on walks, he will bounce around on his back legs like a kangaroo 😂his bark is quite something too - incredibly loud and piercing! I'm forever having to apologise because he's made people jump lol.

He's good with other dogs though and great with people, he's just incredibly excitable. At home he's surprisingly calm and will happily just chill out.

With respect, if he came from rural Spain there is very little chance of some of the breeds you mention being found there to contribute to his ancestry. Coonhounds are not common outside the US, for example. OTOH there are only so many ways for genes to mix together in any dog, so it’s possible for a crossbreed to look quite like a certain breed by chance.

Frequency · 26/07/2023 19:32

I don't know what breeds are common in Spain. It's other people who've mentioned the other breeds. A dog walker we meet sometimes is utterly convinced he is a pedigree Coonhound. I'd never heard of them before that.

I usually describe him as a Beagle cross or just say we don't know when we're asked what he is.

Huntaway is sounding like a very close match appearance and behavior-wise.

Not sure but my rescue is a smaller relative! The rescue centre said she's a Lakeland terrier but I'm not convinced!

She's an absolute sweetheart.

Frequency · 26/07/2023 19:58

Mine is not a sweetheart. I adore him. He is funny, loving and very, very clever but there is nothing sweet about him.

DDs friend once said, "trying to love your dog is like trying to love a box of frogs". I thought it was an excellent description of him Grin

We had a terrier when we adopted him and later brought in a chihuahua which has Big Dog convinced he can also fit on our laps. He will chill in the house but if you look in his direction you'd best be ready to play. He only has two settings "excited" and "sleeping".

Coonhounds have incredibly long, floppy ears with a rounded end (like a Basset). IMO the only thing he has in common with a Coonhound is the colouring, but tan and black is incredibly common across loads of breeds anyway!

Frequency · 26/07/2023 20:17

He doesn't have floppy ears, although his ears are bigger than they look in the pics. I did think his face, size, and coloring were close to the one pictured in this article when I researched them. He's not pedigree anything, imo, but if they're not commonly found in Spain there is likely no Coonhound in him. Whatever breed(s) he is was not desirable enough to keep or sell him.

I wouldn't describe him as stubborn, necessarily, but he will weigh up his options when asked to follow a command unlike my terrier who would just blindly obey. He'll do anything for a game of fetch or a treat.

This shows the true size of his ears in comparison with the rest of him. DD calls him Bat Dog.

He could have a good chunk Pondeco in him as they are Spanish hunting dogs I believe.

I used to have lakelands, and they didn't look like that. Lakeland mix, possibly.

Bsmirched · 26/07/2023 22:50

@LakieLady I agree!

EdithStourton · 27/07/2023 09:26

I don't think that at 25kg he's big enough to be a huntaway - friends have one (who DOES herd the cattle!) and he is huge, I'd say >30kg easily. Yours might have huntaway in him - but they're a mix of breeds which includes rott, iirc.

Most US hounds have ginormous ears in the flesh.

Whatever he is, he's gorgeous.
