Dog ate corn on the cob - I'm panicking

Greytshakes · 25/07/2023 20:27

Our greyhound ate about half of a cooked corn on the cob about 3-4 hours ago. I now know it's potentially dangerous because indigestible and can cause bowel obstruction. She seemed to chew it pretty well and has crapped since (normally, think it was this morning's meal as no corn in it) - she shows no signs of pain or distress. Has eaten a bit of yoghurt and drunk water.

I am taking her to the vet first thing in the morning regardless but is there anything we need to look out for in the meantime, or anything we can do to ease the corn through? E.g. a bit of olive oil on her breakfast ? too late to induce vomiting now and anyway don't have any HP.

Or am I freaking out for no good reason ?

I wouldn’t panic, I’m sure she’ll be fine, perhaps a dodgy tummy for a couple of days, if you want to take her to the vet to put your mind at ease then do so

MyGirlDaisy · 25/07/2023 21:07

I would err on the side of caution and phone ooh vets for advice, especially as Greyhounds are prone to bloat.
Hopefully it will just pass through if she chewed it but I would definitely seek advice tonight. If she is insured some insurance companies have 24 hour advice lines too.

IngGenius · 25/07/2023 21:10

I would panic and would take to ooh asap. It needs to be removed and if done soon they may make your dog sick if safe to do so to remove it.

You need to seek medical advice asap.

Dente · 25/07/2023 21:15

Did she eat the cob ? Because dogs can eat corn it’s the the cob that’s the issue

Guineapiggiesmalls · 25/07/2023 21:16

I’d go to out of ours, if only to put your mind at ease.

I’ve known two dogs to do this in the last year, and both ended up in the vet. I’d go proactively. I’m sure your dog will be fine, but better safe than sorry.

IngGenius · 25/07/2023 21:18

Please OP do contact the OOH vet asap.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 25/07/2023 21:20

I’d call OOH, a friends dog must have got some out of the bin (she didn’t know until it had been removed) he got seriously ill sort of out of nowhere (was absolutely fine when she went to bed to being at deaths door when she was up with the toddler in the early hours), cost a fortune at the vets, I’d call now for some advice.

IngGenius · 25/07/2023 21:22

OP sorry to hassle but the difference between going to OOh tonight or not could not only be the money which could amount to thousands if surgery is required rather than remove the cob now but also to put it bluntly this could cause a major risk to your dogs life.

We give corn on the cob to the dog all the time! Kids leftovers. Never any trouble

Please stop… I think Edward foundation recently had a dog in that was fed one, look at their Facebook page if you want to see the risks…

TiktokFamousDog · 25/07/2023 21:24

I would call your vet and ask what they advise.

Newuser75 · 25/07/2023 21:26

How is the dog? Any vomiting or anything? People are right in that they can be very dangerous for dogs so I'd contact the vet for advice.

Blimey we used to too - never knew about issues. Our dogs loved them

You must have been very lucky!!

MrsKwazi · 25/07/2023 21:31

My dog (golden retriever) stole and ate the chickens’ cobs all the time. No
problems, epic poos
though!

Corn is ok but the cob is brutal for dogs.

It can not be digested at all, it is abrasive and buggers up the intestines, it absorbs moisture so dehydrates the dogs which in itself can cause infection. Even chewed it can cause mega issues.

You have been extremely lucky if your dog has not had any issues and also in the minority of dogs eating corn cobs.

It is not a game of roulette I would ever play with my dogs

NoSquirrels · 25/07/2023 21:32

So, my dog did this and I also panicked once I’d googled.

The OOH vet said they would not induce vomiting, because the cob is so rough it could potentially cause an issue on the way back up. We just had to keep a very close eye on her and if there was any hint that she wasn’t pooing or looked at all in pain to come in straightaway.

Google told me we wouldn’t be out of danger for weeks; the vet said realistically these are edge cases and danger period would be 12-48 hours for most dogs. If the corn cob looks like it’s coming out in their poo, then you can relax a bit.

StrongTea · 25/07/2023 21:32

One of ours did that, had a scan so vet could see where the pieces were. The scan did show clearly where the bits were. She vomited some up shortly after she ate it. I kept the bits to show the vet. Also I checked her poo for other bits. Was given lactulose to keep things moving. Was a few days before I was certain all the bits had passed through. Bit scary but she was fine.

IngGenius · 25/07/2023 21:37

The cob can be remove endoscopically or by vomiting depending on size of dog etc and size of the pieces only an x ray can tell unless the owner can give specific details

However if it not safe to come up the tubes for it to go through to be passed are even narrower so a big risk alongside the risk of infection

DontStealTheTeddy · 25/07/2023 21:41

Our dog once vomited a huge piece of corn cob. We hadn't eaten any sweetcorn for about 10 days, so it had been in her stomach for that long. Do contact the vet OP.

Greytshakes · 26/07/2023 05:30

Thanks so much everyone. She seems fine this morning, slept near me overnight and no issues. Did an unusually large crap on her morning walk which came out very easily and looks like it had corn and cob bits in it. Ate her breakfast as usual about 30 mins ago. Will keep a very close eye and take her to vet this morning anyway (we are abroad, they don't answer the phone..)

Just back from the vets. They took an X ray - she seems to have more gas than usual in some parts of her intestine but the vet couldn't see any blockage as such and her stomach was ok on palpation. He said we need to go by her symptoms - she may have some loose stools / gas which is normal but if she vomits or seems to be in pain then we need to take her back in immediately. So I'm hopeful she will be OK. Thanks again for all your replies.

They wouldnt have seen much if she had had breakfast!

Pandorapitstop · 26/07/2023 08:36

I have two greyhounds and didn’t know this about corn cobs. Yes, keep a close watch on her. Hope all will be well.

longtompot · 26/07/2023 08:48

I'm glad you have taken your dog to the vets. My neighbours didn't realise the issue with corn on the cob and nearly lost their dog (English Bull Terrier) a few weeks ago after it found one after one of their bbqs. She needed an op and even then it was touch and go whether she would survive. She is doing really well now
