Stage 3 kidney disease

Dog has been diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease. It was stage 1 a few months ago. Has anyone been through this? What survival can I expect?

Staging is about the numbers. A lot is going to depend on how your dog is.

I had a clients dog diagnosed with stage three - he was given 3-6 months but they ended up having him PTS about a week after his diagnosis.

Some dogs with right management to support what's left of the kidney function and avoid further damage can stabilise or drop back down a level as it copes better but may depend on what's caused it and if still ongoing issue causing further decline. My vet is great but tbh i think is more a specialist area and like many only advised to switching to a renal diet (which can come with issues) & monitoring with regular blood/urine but actually wasn't including what I needed to know in the panel's.
This FB CKD group is a great resource and can help interpret the blood/urine tests to guide what action to take. You will also see that some dogs do last year's with CKD others may have a more swift decline or like mine taken by something else entirely.

I didn't go with renal diet and consulted a canine nutritionist instead who came up with a mix of homemade/commercial and various herbs to aid, some use holistic vets as apart from fluid therapy isn't a treatment can give to fix it. Stem cells can help revitalise and improve function but the filter nephrons don't actually regenerate.

Thank you for the reply! That's exactly what the vet recommended- renal diet and regular monitoring. Our dog is 15 and I just wonder are we trying to prolong a life in a very old dog anyway? I was charged 50 for a blood pressure check, 65 for urine and they want me to come in every 6 weeks to repeat. She isn't eating the food they prescribed and that was 30 for a small 2kg bag!
