Itchy legs and toes

Hey there, hope you can help. Ddog is a 2 year old viszla, who has never suffered with allergies before. She has started nibbling her feet and legs, and is making the top of her toes quite pink.
She eats Forthglade wet food with a sprinkling of Lilly's kitchen dry food, but has not had any problems with that either.
She is treated regularly for fleas with Nexguard, and our cat has the frontline flea drops.
I don't know what can be causing it. I have bought some Anicura dog spray with soothes the itchy areas on her toes, but I would really like to work out the cause.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

PS am due to take her to the vets soon for kennel cough vaccine so will raise then if I can't get to the bottom of it soon.

If she's nibbling to the point of her toes going pink why are you waiting? Would you like to be that itchy? Make a vet appointment as she could be reacting to food, or various grass pollen or laundry products, but it could be such a straight forward fix.

I only noticed the two pink toes yesterday and can’t make an appointment until tomorrow @NotBotheredAnymore.
i did buy the spray as soon as I noticed it.

Dogs can develop allergies at any point in their lives - if it's her legs and toes that are bothering her, it's possibly something environmental - pollen or grass, or a new product in her environment?

dogsweetdog · 23/07/2023 18:02

Dogs can take piriton (the original one, not the once a day piriteze) you'll have to google how much to give her as it depends on weight.

Sadilicious · 23/07/2023 18:50

She has been really hungry lately and has had terrible wind so I wonder if it’s a yeast thing?
anyway will update you after the vets appt.

Is she up to date with her worming and flea treatments?

MillWood85 · 23/07/2023 18:53

Can you check and see if she's got a grass seed stuck? My spaniel had one in between his toes last year and he was chewing it non stop. You may feel it rather than see it, if that makes sense.

I put a thick layer of sudocrem over the itchy area, taped a sock over it and by morning there was a massive seed working its way out.

Sadilicious · 23/07/2023 18:54

Yes she is, as is our cat - we get alerts
from the vets to make sure 😌

I have checked but couldn’t see anything - I’ll look again though. 😊

A friend's viszla had the same problem and it turned out to be an allergy to grass pollen.

That’s interesting- I wouldn’t have thought grass produces pollen now (there are so many seeds about? Am obviously not an expert tho!) but I will keep her out of the long grass from now on just to make sure. Thanks 🙏

It might be Harvest mites as they can cause dogs to chew their feet red raw, my old departed boy used to suffer them, yet my bitch never has, vet plucked some hair from between his toes and looked at it under a microscope to see the little blighters, but I used to spray his feet with frontline then massage it in weekly from July to November to keep them at bay.Harvest Mites

That’s nightmarish/interesting! Thanks - would her Nexguard protect her from those? If not it seems possible it could be these as the timing makes sense. Would other dogs in the park get them too?

I had a thought that she might have caught mange, as some of our local foxes look very poorly, but Nexguard protects against that apparently.

Vet Wednesday so will update you all then.

Not sure about Nexguard, I treat mine with Advocate and it didn't cover them, I think some dogs are just more attractive to them, as I say my boy used get eaten and react a lot to them, my girl never showed any symptoms and has never chewed her feet, he did used to get the tell tale yellow crusting/scabbing at the base of the hair around the sores.
