Dog just gone in heat go on holiday next week

As above we are due to go on a U.K. holiday next week but my dog has just come into heat. This will probably be her last heat as we will get a spayed (her last one was last November! ) She is a small breed - cocker spaniel

What do I do? We are staying in a caravan in a woodland holiday village but we wouldn't be able to go to the beach, would we? Dogs around the campsite would be unfair. It's a family friends van and so we can't arrange for over summer as fully booked!

Other half is staying at home (it's not our main holiday this year) but he is working! Arghhh!!!!

The dog needs to stay home - please don't take her on holiday with you, it's not fair on her or on anyone else with dogs. Even neutered males will be able to smell her.

If DH is working then maybe see if a dog walker can come and spend time with her - they won't walk her if she's in season though.

I know she does! Just an absolute pain. Weather is already looking rubbish still and this just adds to it!!!

Leave her home , it will also mean you can do more indoor things whilst you are away if the weather is crap .

Leonberger · 22/07/2023 11:09

100% leave her. It will drive other dogs insane, completely unfair.

TeaKitten · 22/07/2023 11:10

Dog has to stay home, he will have to just deal with it, it’s just part of owning a pet.

That is true and can do things we haven't been able to do there before because of the dog

Your DH is staying home, so it will be fine. He'll just have to work round it and juggle the two.

It will be much more of a pain having to deal with an in-season dog in rubbish weather, believe me Grin

Your OH will be fine with her at home, and you can enjoy a stress-free holiday!

itispersonal · 22/07/2023 11:23

Oh is at work for 6 so it's letting dog out at 5.45 and he gets home at 2.30 There is a dog flap so she can go outside and she's used to being alone though not for that long usually!

Hoping next door neighbour will get back off holiday so he can give her a bit of fuss.

OH isn't happy as he was looking forward to an easy week of just work and looking after himself. So he's not happy as he really never wanted a dog!!!! But hopefully that's just his ASD and once he's got his head around the plans changing he'll be ok! Not much choice really!

People where I live carry on as normal judging by a lot of the dogs we meet but not something I would do.

Our pup came into season during the Easter holiday when we HAD to take her to a city for a week with an enormous park at the end of the road with hundreds of dogs in daily. Whilst we avoided the park obviously we had no problems despite the fact we were dreading it. We walked early and late and drove her out to places where we knew we'd meet nobody and used a harness and long line for her main walk.

I don't think I'd take one to a holiday village, or camp site but it wasn't the issue we were expecting away from home. We have an entire dog that stays with a neighbour and I told her so she would be aware and she said the dog had not shown any interest and he's a randy little sod when you go round to visit 😂

I think you need to look at getting someone to come in mid-morning - that's a really long time for her to be left, especially as she won't have had a walk first.

itispersonal · 22/07/2023 12:05

It's on my list @cinnamonfrenchtoast i asked my DM (who I'm going with) if she thought if it would be a good idea by my elderly aunt to have her, as she's recently had her dog put to sleep and missing having the company but she didn't think it would be fair on my aunt or the dog (as aunt not fully capable of looking after a dog) and also she moults so it would be a no go for my Aunt! It would just be Wednesday to Friday! As OH doesn't work sun, Mon and does a short day on Tuesday and we might come home Friday instead of the Saturday!

It sounds like it should be pretty sorted as it's only for a few days :) Good luck and have a good holiday!

Unluckycat1 · 22/07/2023 13:40

Snap @Newpeep having read mumsnet threads about in season bitches I thought people kept them inside as otherwise they'd be dogs breaking free from their owners, jumping six foot fences and running miles to try to impregnate them. Since having my dog I've met so many in season bitches on regular middle of the day walks, with other dogs acting perfectly normal around them. When i said to some dog owners that I'd probably keep mine in when she had her first season they looker incredulous and said it would be cruel to not walk her. I'm coming to think the advice on here is quite ott at times. Not sure if I'd take her on holiday to a caravan site though, unless you get a fenced garden area?

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 22/07/2023 14:10

Before we got our beagle neutered, he tried to leap out of a top-opening window about 6ft off the ground to try and get at the neighbours in-season bitch, and his behaviour afterwards was awful. He whined constantly and just wouldn't settle for days.

Obviously not all dogs will behave like that, but it certainly does happen. Since we got him neutered four years ago, he's never behaved like that, despite the bitch still coming into season regularly.

Unluckycat1 · 22/07/2023 17:21

Yikes @cinnamonfrenchtoast glad he didn't manage to escape! Am I right in thinking beagles are scent dogs? Maybe it's extra hard for them to ignore what I'm guessing is communicated via smell.

I've noticed a lot of anti-neutering of males sentiment recently, so it's almost refreshing to see a post showing a pro.

Most vets now don't recommend neutering for males as a matter of course but do if there is a behavioural or medical benefit. Obviously if in season females are bothering them there is a need but I know many entire males who are in no way affected.

Females it is still recommended to neuter but only after 2 - 3 seasons. Ours will be spayed after her next (2nd) season.

So it's not anti neutering - it's neuter if it has a benefit.

Yes - he is a scent dog which I suspect didn't help matters Grin

I'd honestly never seen him like that before - it was actually quite upsetting. He was really quite distressed that he couldn't find this bitch - he also went off his food which is really unlike him.

Obviously that's quite extreme and plenty of entire males seem to manage fine around in-season females, but it really freaked me out!

Unluckycat1 · 22/07/2023 17:39

@Newpeep I suppose the wider benefit might be less unwanted puppies and the bitches having their first few seasons not being harassed, but like I said in my first post I've not seen an in-season bitch being surrounded by desperate males so maybe neither of those points are relevant, I guess I'll find out in the next few months as my girl will have her first soon I'm sure and we are surrounded by dogs!

Is it wise her able to go out on her own? Is there anyway a dog could get to her?
