Can't take dog food into France

crossstitchingnana · 20/07/2023 09:26

Just found out that due to Brexit we can't take dog food with us to France next month. Anybody have any tips on decent dog food to buy out there? Dh has just told me we'll have to take vegan food or feed her here and then buy some there.

What a palaver.

Why?

you can’t take fresh meat no. But meat sealed in a tin or dried dog food won’t be an issue

You cant take any meat or dairy products into France. You can take a small amount of pet food but only if its for medical reasons and even then its a limited amount

Caspianberg · 20/07/2023 09:36

@dementedpixie is this just a French thing rather than eu?
ie when they say dairy they mean milk and fresh yogurt, you 100% can take a bar of chocolate with you

Its EU rules

2kg limit on pet foods if medically required

Food Safety

Personal imports

Personal goods containing meat, milk or their products brought into the EU continue to present a real threat to animal health throughout the Union.

I would just order your usual brand from zooplus.fr and get it delivered to your holiday accommodation if it’s easier

I travel regularly thru France with the Eurotunnel. I don't think there is any problem with taking dog food in- realistically no one will check ! As long as you are not taking enormous amounts, I think it will be fine.

cafecreme · 20/07/2023 11:39

I still take in through and we go regularly through the tunnel to see family in the EU and for holidays.

crossstitchingnana · 20/07/2023 12:28

We're also going Eurotunnel so that's helpful to know.

Thanks for the website/ordering tips too.

We took eurotunnel to france last summer and brought dog food with us-no issue at all.
Ours was dry though-is that what you are taking? I see no fresh meat allowed.

crossstitchingnana · 20/07/2023 13:35

Apparently fry dog food is not allowed either. Our dog is on Millie's Wolfheart, can't see me getting that in France!

Is this the first time you’ve travelled to France with a dog since Brexit? Just checking you’re aware of the new Animal Health Cert?

BoohooWoohoo · 20/07/2023 13:42

Is your dog food available on Amazon.fr?

Lotuskid · 20/07/2023 14:00

We’ve just come back from travelling through Europe with our dog and I saw the same thing so didn’t bring any of her food with us.
With her just being on pedigree, I checked local pet stores to make sure they sold it & bought it when we got over there.. it ended up being not exactly the same as the UK version and upset her tummy quite significantly. She ended up living off boiled rice & chicken for the time we were out there.

Id say to bring your dog food with you, the only thing they’ll do is take it off you if it’s found at customs. And chances are, they won’t check 🤷🏽‍♀️

Caspianberg · 20/07/2023 14:06

Ps my in laws brought us loads of cheddar cheese and bacon over from uk recently. They weren’t stopped. I doubt dog food is a huge issue.

I know it’s ‘ law’ but it’s rubbish. Those laws linked above are from 2002, 18 years before brexit even happened. It’s uk, 26 miles from mainland eu, not remote Australia. Its also very easy for us to buy uk imports here so the food does come through all the time, just at a import cost of paperwork. My local shop sell wykes cheese

ColonelSpondleClagnut · 20/07/2023 15:14

@Caspianberg It's EU rules. No meat or dairy, fresh, dried or otherwise. Including chocolate, and foodstuffs with powdered milk for example.
The chances of getting caught are slim, and the chances of getting into trouble for being caught even slimmer, but those are the rules.
Also applies to seeds (for growing flowers and vegetables etc) which now need an EU certificate 🙄

vivainsomnia · 21/07/2023 10:49

I didn't know this. Went twice via Eurostar taking 10 days worth of dog food each time and didn't have any issue either time.

Saying that, almost all main brands are available in France.

RunningFromInsanity · 21/07/2023 17:48

I’ve got through the Euro tunnel with cool boxes full of fruit, meat, dairy etc. Never been an issue.
