Frenchie going mad?

My frenchie has suddenly become so naughty and aggravating! He’s 7 years old, has always been a quiet, calm, placid dog who would sleep most of the day. He wasn’t bothered about food, often refused to eat and basically just pottered around in his own world.

For the past two weeks he’s suddenly changed. As soon as we go to bed he starts messing around, trying to rip stuff up, aggravating my other dog, yapping and running around the house causing mayhem. Last night we had to go down 3 times to see to him.

Everytime I leave the house he starts on my other dog (temperamental Dobermann) yapping at her and annoying her … I had to come back into the house twice this morning to stop him (I could hear the yapping from outside!)

Today he dived on her and tried to take her favourite toy off her (he’s NEVER played with toys!)

Yesterday he decided to go and stick his head in her bowl whilst she was eating - again he’s NEVER done that before and I had to move him quick.

On top of this he’s become obsessed with food, eating constantly when before it was a battle to get him to eat anything!

Any idea what could be going on? It’s like he’s had a total personality transplant. I’m worried he’s going to push my Dobie too far and end up getting hurt. Does it warrant a vet visit?

Yes, I would take to the vet. If there is a physical cause the sooner you know and can take steps, the better. If no physical cause, they may be able to recommend a good behaviourist.

And I think as a matter of some urgency, you need to find ways to keep the dogs separate in the house. It does not sound safe to leave them alone together right now.

Take him to the vet, sudden changes in behaviour can be indicative of pain, as a breed they are predisposed to a litany of ailments.

I think it's definitely worth a visit to the vet. My DDog gets similarly unsettled when she needs her anal glands expressing but she is a breed that does suffer with that particular problem Wink

The vet - absolutely.

Any unexplained change in behaviour in a mature dog should start with a vet check to rule in/out a medical cause.

Yes - an urgent vet visit is needed.

How is he on walks? Has anything changed there?

He sounds as if he might be bored and making amusement for himself.

Agree with everyone else, definitely sounds as if this needs a vet visit.

Is he wormed? Could be worms causing pain and hunger.
Have walks reduced or changed in anyway?
Is it possible there was an altercation beteeen the dogs when you were out and now he doesn't like being left alone with the other?
As pp said vet is best.
My cat suddenly developed anxiety at age 8 out the blue with no change we could think of. Had a short course of anti depressants and has been fine since. Animals are sensitive to unknown things sometimes. Our vet thinks it was the noise of our washer! Random.
