Brand new puppy - pee accidents!

We’ve just brought home our sweet 9 week old spaniel puppy. We’re in the super early days of trying to keep to a routine, including toileting. The thing that is getting me down is that we really struggle to get our puppy peeing outside 😭

When we think he needs a pee, we take him out (using collar and lead) but he just sits there and whines, and doesn’t go. When we bring him back in, he tends to pee within 5-10mins and so quickly, we can’t discern what is an ‘investigation’ / exploring behaviour (he doesn’t tend to pace or whine, just pootles over to a corner and immediately squats), and a getting ready to pee behaviour. This means we end up having accidents.

The smell and clean-up and just lack of warning are just breaking my heart - I have never had dogs before, and I found myself seriously questioning if I had done the right thing on night 1.

Are there any tips you would recommend for getting better at this? Thank you in advance!

What @Bovrilla said!

And I'm pretty certain that this is the same advice you will see on the Dog Training Advice and Support group on Facebook. Take a look OP, their advice is amazing. You can also pay a small amount to join their puppy group and receive individual, speedy advice. I found it invaluable!

I have just been through this and I had puppy on lead and harness mainly so they knew it was business time to pee or poop, I also didn't hang about outside after pee or poop to begin with, I also have a huge garden and if pup-took off he could have slipped through the hedge. if he was very determined.

I did crate train, and he started going through the night quite quickly but it worked because I'm a night owl and would take him out for a pee/poop around midnight and husband gets up around 4.30- 5am, so he would take him out again then put him back in the crate, he would sometimes wake at 2 - 3 am for wee but rarely and at 12 weeks he didn't wake at all and easily slept for the 5 hours and would go longer at the weekends. He is almost 6 months now and I think we have had no accidents for 2 weeks now, so fingers crossed he has got it.

My previous puppy never had any indicators or tells and would just wee everywhere whenever no matter how hard we tried to train her, but she did get it around 7 -8 months, I swear by Simple Solution to clear up and remove the smells.

Please ignore the advice of your breeder. That’s awful. FB group dog training advice and support is much better.
Outside after eating, drinking, playing, sleeping and every half an hour or so. If pup doesn’t go then back out in 5 mins or at the first signs of looking for a place. Massive praise when it happens outside.
And please don’t leave a pup to cry.

I'm.in the training advice Fb group it's great and their guides are great reference. I'm also in a spaniel training group, if you are on Facebook try and join them and throw your pee book in the bin!

Thank you all so much for your advice. I was probably being unrealistic and just anxious / stressed. It's all new for each of us, including pup.

He's had some excellent garden wees and poos this evening - and then a little accident inside.

Could I just ask, if the dog is sleeping in the crate overnight (say 10pm - 5.30am), and I take him out every 2 hours for pees to avoid him soiling his crate - will he get enough sleep? I assume he will be more awake having gone outside, and then will need to take time to wind down / might cry at being left in his crate again.

His sleep isn't routinely night/,day time sleep yet its just sleep so he can catch up during the day , everybody will do it differently, I had pup in crate beside me so I heard him and took him out during the night, usually twice. Then up in the morning. Others set alarms but either way he will catch up on his sleep. You not so much I'm sorry to say !

mine no longer have crates as we are in a very hot country now and I want them to be able to move around the house during the day if we are out. Night time.. well we have made a rod for our own backs. our girl is amazing..she sleeps between us down by our feet. Our little boy is now 55 lbs and still thinks he can sleep on my head above me on my pillow.. uggh. but I wouldn't change it for the world. On the odd occasion that they do need out in the night they make it very clean with a cold wet nose poke in our faces lol. It will happen and you will forget all about the puppy training hell

Hi OP! I’ve also just got a cocker spaniel puppy, he’s 10 weeks and so far only had one accident on the day we got him.

He goes outside every hour minimum, immediately after he’s eaten, after every big drink, before bed at 10pm and I wake at 5am and take him out then. Praise the second he starts doing his business and continue until he’s finished, then pet and treat. I’ve had a rescue before who was a nightmare to toilet train so I’m desperate to not have this one the same. Also make sure everyone in the house knows when they’ve just been so everyone can be aware of when they might need to go again.

My dogs go mad for these at the vets so purchased a bucket full. That's a lot of rewards I reckon 😂

Yes you need to take him out after food, playing, waking and every 30 minutes minimum. I used a diary so we could see when we'd last gone out Once out, stay out for as long as it takes. Even if it's an hour. When he goes make like a party!! Brilliant treats fuss playing whatever he likes!
Back in. And repeat.... and don't let him go out without you because you need to be there to praise!
We got our pup last winter I spent literally hours in the garden no matter the weather!
