Neighbours dog crying

Bloodyleaverspartybollocks · 11/07/2023 09:12

Our NDN has a dog. They are out all day and it cries for the entire time.
They know it cries but still leave it for about 10 hours at a time.

I can't stand it it's breaking my heart.

Will the dog get used to being on its own eventually?

No they won't. They just get worse.

The only way you can do anything about it is by informing the council as a noise complaint. There are lots of things your neighbours can do to help their dog but I suspect if they are leaving it for 10 hours they won't be willing or able to as that's an unreasonable amount of time for any dog of any age.

sympatico1 · 11/07/2023 09:30

I couldn't bear to think of that poor dog in distress; I would contact the Council/RSPCA to let them know what's going on. As a huge dog lover I would also be tempted to offer to either let the dog out a couple of times a day (if they have a garden) or offer to have the dog in my house when ever I could. I know it's a massive favour, but I would gladly help out if I could.

Sunnydaysarentagiveneveninjuly · 11/07/2023 09:36

Contact the council.. You will get a diary sheet.. Save that poor ddog as well as your mh op. I do know a couple who rehomed due to complaints. As it should have been. They are abusing it by neglect..

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 11/07/2023 09:43

Ten hours is ridiculous.

The RSPCA won’t/can’t do anything if it’s fed and watered.
Id report it as a noise complaint and see what happens from there

Have you been around and expressed concern?

nasanas · 11/07/2023 09:51

We had this. Nobody was interested sadly. No idea what happened to the dog in the end one day it juts disappeared, I hope for a better life

Rhondaa · 11/07/2023 10:53

This is awful, absolutely neglect. You need to be assertive and tell them you are worried about its welfare plus the noise is distressing to listen to. Ask them to get a dog walker or at the very least someone to let it out a couple of times.

Is it a new dog or has it been going on a while?

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 11/07/2023 12:14

If the dog has food, water and shelter then the only people who may help are the council via a noise complaint.

You'll need proof of what's happened, recordings etc.

ItWasntMyFault · 11/07/2023 12:53

Do you like dogs? Could you offer to have it with you during the day or part of the day?

RedRobyn2021 · 11/07/2023 13:14

Have you thought about offering to pop in on the dog or walk the dog?

Obviously you would be doing them a huge favour, but it's so sad

Bloodyleaverspartybollocks · 12/07/2023 09:42

I'm working all day but can pop in lunch time for 5 minutes.

That's a help and very kind of you. On my FB local page I have seen adverts placed by dogowners who are out all day asking if those who love dogs but can't have one for various reasons, would like to 'borrow' their's during daytime hours. There is an organisation called Borrow My Doggy which vets the arrangement. It's completely free and I saw lots of offers from people who would love to have the company of a dog. Perhaps tell your neighbours about it?

PineappleRumble · 12/07/2023 15:10

Unfortunately if the dog has food and water no one will do anything.

We reported similar to the council, the rspca and dog warden but no action was ever taken. Poor thing howled all day and I never saw them walk it. I hope you can get some action taken OP.

Bloodyleaverspartybollocks · 12/07/2023 17:22

I don't want to report it. The dog has been rescued already and is a lovely thing who is loved. Aside from the leaving him he's treated well.
I'll try and make more time and offer to go around. This is why I don't have a dog I couldn't live with the guilt.

He isn't treated well though, leaving a dog alone for 10hrs is neglect.

Just ask them to organise a dog walker or at least someone to let it out.

Bloodyleaverspartybollocks · 13/07/2023 13:39

He's loved I can see that.

He was rescued from kennels as far as I know and hasn't had a proper home before.
I think he's used to loads of other dogs around him

Ffs. I take it back.
The poor dog has been crying for hours. I can't stand it. They've been in work all day and now they've gone out. He's been crying pretty much since 8am.

Triflenot · 26/07/2023 08:14

I wouldn’t offer to go round for a 5 minute visit OP, I don’t think it will particularly help you or the dog tbh.
Could they afford a dog walker? Or as PP said, suggest the Borrow
My Doggy website to them.

Agree with this, ten hours is too long. Many years ago when I was in my twenties my circumstances changed, dog day care wasn’t a thing at the time , so for a couple of years my dog was left alone for full days on some days of the week. It still bothers me decades later. At the time I was stuck and only had an occasional drop in from a friend, but looking back I know it was horrible for my dog and wish I’d had a daycare option for him then.
It was more common at the time for people to leave dogs alone all day, but thankfully now there are all sorts of dog care options, and no need to leave your dog alone for long stretches . I am very surprised that they were allowed to rescue this dog when nobody is home all day long.
I would say to them that the dog is crying all day, is clearly very stressed and needs to go to daycare or have a Walker .

hennybeans · 26/07/2023 08:50

You need to record the dog’s crying for one minute every hour of the day and then send that recording to them so they can listen to ten full minutes of the dog crying. Explain that you have listened to ten hours of that crying.

They are probably in denial telling themselves it only cries for a bit when they first leave and sleeps mostly. It’s beyond cruel to leave a dog like that. The dog was better off in kennels where at least it had company and exercise. You need to record that crying every day and send it to them so they can’t bury their heads in the sand.

"Aside from leaving him he's treated well"?

That's his whole day, spent in misery! How is that being treated well?

spiderlight · 26/07/2023 15:15

That poor, poor dog! What kind of rescue would allow a dog to go to a home where he'd be alone all day every day? Your local dog warden might be willing to go round and have a word with them - I know ours would. Environmental health at the council as well - keep a diary.

In some cases, dogs can get used to being alone to some extent but it varies from one dog to another. It's essential for the dog's well-being that they receive proper attention, exercise and mental stimulation. Regularly leaving a dog alone for extended hours can lead to loneliness and separation anxiety. Another option to consider is recommending anxiety medication for dogs. Some dogs benefit from medication prescribed by a veterinarian, especially if they suffer from severe separation anxiety. However, this should only be explored after consulting with a professional. Your neighbour must discuss with their vet whether anxiety medication is appropriate for their dog.
