Cars and dog crates (or seat belts)

I've 2 dogs and I've had a TransK9 crate for many years, It started off in an Evoque and since then I've had two different cars and it's fitted them (the cars were all a bit bigger than the Evoque).

Anyway, I need to replace my car and I want something smaller (and cheaper). I looked at Renault Capturs, Peugeot 2008's and the nice man in Mazda measured all their vehicles and the ones in Honda next door and anything apart from huge cars wouldn't fit my crate.

So I'm back to the drawing board. I'll change the crate if I have to, but I want one as safe because I'd be devastated if they were in a crash and anything happened and I'd swapped them out of a safe crate iyswim.

I'm going to be single and in my 50s, so the car is only for me and the dogs, but I want something that reflects me...

Any ideas of cool cars that fit 2 dogs and crates or safe seatbelts...

Thank you!

I know variocage is crash tested and crush proof, they fit most cars, depending on the size of the cage, what size are the dogs?

variocage’s website, a handy tool to check whether a car can fit a crate. You can search by car model and see which crates fit inside, or search by crate model and see which cars they fit

You could get a boot guard. The boot in the Kaptur isn't massive and if your dogs were tethered to the chassis it should be just as safe as a crate.

Hello - Thank you all. The dogs are cocker spaniels so not huge.

I transport my cocker spaniel on the back seat of my Fiat 500. He has a crash tested Bergan harness and is in a Wuglo dog booster seat which is enclosed on four sides. Not perfect I admit but it’s probably the safest I can make him.

I quite fancy a Fiat 500. Something nippy and cute rather than the big mumsy cars I've been driving which actually annoy me as after a few failed IVF's the last thing I want to be driving is a car made for a mum!

In Mazda I fell in love with an MX5 (I used to have one when I was In my 20s) - but clearly I can't have that with two dogs!

@startingoveragainagain Probably not the Mazda with two dogs although I used to have a Smart convertible (hence the username) which mine used to travel in on the front seat! We had great times nipping around with the roof down. He even had a pair of doggie goggles 😂

I have a sling cover on the back seat and two restraint things that go round the head rest, I. used to have them in the boot behind a dog guard but I have the fear of someone rear ending me with them in the car, so I feel they have a little more chance on the back seat, but mine are fairly small dogs and I use their normal harnesses.

Oh don't get a kadjar then, it's serious mumsy!

All you need for spaniels then is a car with two isofix points in the back. I have a steel tether that clips onto the isofix and onto my dog's harness. Most cars should have two points.

Same, my dogs also got a lot more stressed in the backseat, the one likes to sit in the middle seat and look out the windscreen, the other likes to wedge herself in between the back of the seats for more stability, they felt a little trapped and a little unstable in the boot.

I can see them in an MX5, wearing flying goggles!

Two cockers can definitely fit in a small car if they're used to travelling in the rear footwell. On long trips they will probably prefer to get under the front seats to snooze. Sometimes they may even both get under one seat presumably to brace against each other and nod off. That also helped save my dogs when my car rolled over in an accident. If you have room you can get all sorts of enclosed environments which are not much if better than under the front seat. The thing is some owners think dogs are people, and need to look out the front window. On a long trip they just want to settle down and snooze somewhere safe and enclosed, and two under the driver's seat is the favoured spot.
