This is normal paracetamol isn't it?
How can vet charge £17 for a box of 15 tablets when I can pop to the chemist & get them for £1. ??!

someone said on a similar thread about why they were charging so much. they said they paid so much for their vet education so its their right to charge like that.
as if people are supposed to pay for their education.
its very bad ripping going on from vulnerable people. totally ruthless.
btw 17pounds is not a small money for many and the idea behind is upsetting.

Nobody has to pay for a vet's education. You pay for services so if a hairdresser charges you £17 for some serum you can get for 17p and you've agreed to it, then nobody's to blame. Going somewhere else or a DIY option is separate from buyer remorse, in this case buyer remorse over an acute health condition.

Thank you for your kind words, it has been an upsetting few days. And you are right in an recession - or at any point for families, it is totally unreasonable

Well everyone sees things differently, and if you thought my posts were personal, I assure you that they were not, the main point is medical treatment of any kind is costly, and more obviously so when you have to pay. Glad your dog has a better prognosis which is the main thing. Thank you for your kind concern, I'm indeed a close friend of peace. The same to you, too!

OP please ignore the more aggressive posts on this thread. There is a debate to be had about whether a vet should be more transparent about OTC medication and I can see both sides of it (though am glad my own vet always has been) but anyone who chooses to interpret your comments as being in any way related to the amount of care you have for your animal is just looking for a way to kick you. Not all vets are great unfortunately. That doesn't mean they are all bad either. Unfortunately unlike the aforementioned hairdresser it can be genuinely stressful trying to work out which is which.

Thank you, that's very kind of you -& balanced - we will definitely be looking for a new vet!

Let me repeat: people in the UK, being used to the NHS, often have little awareness of the true cost of healthcare.

No one ever got rich as a veterinarian in the UK. they have to recoup their costs one way or another.

A good vet is worth their weight in gold. More so than a good GP. Animals can't talk, so if you are happy with your pet's veterinary care, stick with them.

Our old girl is on paracetamol too, our vet said just buy the regular tablets. She is so greedy she knows the click of the pill packets as we put them in a sausage and she gulps them down.

She also gets gabapentin and rheumacalm but I get that from the vets. She’s on palliative care now for a bone tumour so I’ll give her everything the vet says to keep her pain free. She eats a huge packet of cocktail sausages a week with all her meds!

When l had shingles l was given some medicated antibiotic powder to put on.
My cat at that time had an ear infection.. the vet charged us £40 for some antibiotic powder.. when my sister got home with the powder ..it was the exact same make in the same box as my shingles powder.

A good vet is not worth more than a good GP, especially in these days of shortages.

A good vet is most definitely worth more than a good GP. Animals can't talk or advocate for themselves.

Our vet charges £50 for a worming tablet.

It's a matter of opinion. I don't think animals are fur babies either.
