Senior dog's illness getting worse - how/when do you decide? (gallbladder moucele)

My little senior (12 years approx.) terrier has a gallbladder mucocele. It was picked up a year ago via routine blood tests. We've been monitoring it via 3 monthly ultrasounds. He had another one today and unfortunately, it has progressed significantly since the last, although he is still happy and presenting healthy.

For those who aren't familiar, it can lead to a rupture which is life threatening. The only solution is to remove the gallbladder but I have done my research and it is a very serious surgery with a low survival rate during the surgery and afterwards. I am not willing to put him through such a traumatic surgery at his age - he can't even handle sedatives well.

My concern is that I don't want him to get to the stage where it ruptures and he is in pain and we find ourselves in an emergency situation, but at the same time, it doesn't feel right to consider the only other option whilst he is a happy dog still enjoying his life.

What/where is the 'middle ground'? Has anyone been in a similar position?

I need a handhold. Feeling very sad and confused.

If he’s eating and enjoying walks I’d keep going. But if you’re going in holiday and leaving him, I’d really consider that.

I do trust my vet, but unfortunately, she is away for 2 weeks so I can't have a chat with her until then. I have to sit tight for a little while until I can see what her thoughts are.

Thanks, that is a good idea. We were thinking of going away for a short trip in September, but I will hold off on it now.

What is the likelihood of a rupture? What would that look like for him? I think it would depend on that - if he would almost certainly die in great pain if it ruptured then I would seriously think about having him pts before that could happen to him even if he’s healthy and happy now. It depends what the outcomes are likely to be for me

I’ve booked in to see another vet I trust on Tuesday for their guidance. I guess all pets (and us) are ticking time bombs, I’m just aware mine is. Not sure what is better or worse!
