18 weeks pregnant and someone's dog bit me, do I need to get it looked at?

I'm staying away at a hotel tonight for my birthday and went for a walk on the beach this evening. There was a young couple sitting at a bench with their dog running around ahead of them in the sand. As soon as it saw me it ran for me and was jumping and snapping at me. By the time the woman had gotten over to get her dog it had bitten my hand and finger but has mostly only bruised it. There is just the tiniest bit of broken skin on my nail cuticle, barely 1mm big that bled a bit then stopped. I figured it would be fine as it's hardly deep, just a scratch but I am prone to worrying so didn't know if this is something I should get looked at tomorrow when I'm home. Don't want the GP to think I'm ridiculous for going for the tiniest scratch.

Yes, if the skin is broken you will probably need a course of antibiotics as dogs mouths are full of germs!!

CorBlimeyGovnr · 22/06/2023 21:18

This happened to me. I didn’t need tetanus vaccination as I’d had it as part of my routine pregnancy injections; they told me no need for rabies as there is none in the UK, so biggest risk was a bacterial infection from the dog bite.

I was given precautionary antibiotics. Take a pic of the wound. You should call your dr and check.

Yes but not because you're pregnant. Any nite that breaks the skin should be seen.

Fizzadora · 22/06/2023 21:20

Yes and report the dog.

Honestly I wouldn't bother for such a tiny injury. I would just keep it clean at home.

I wouldn't risk it and would ask the dr for a course of antibiotics today before the weekend

The broken skin is barely 1mm - honestly it probably won't even be visible in the morning.

But that's my risk to take - obviously if OP is worried then they should go and see a doctor but I've had way worse than that and have just cleaned it up at home.

Some people on this thread have urged you to see a doctor and ask for antibiotics! Antibiotics are only to be used when there is a infection. If the wound is small and not deep, keeping it clean until it is healed is the best bet.
Overuse of antibiotics is a huge problem which will eventually result in them being completely useless, then we will all be in trouble.

My dog caught the side of my finger. Surgery took it seriously, tetanus jab and three days of antibiotics.

OneScotchEgg · 24/06/2023 13:24

It seems to be healing well and as it's so small I don't think I'll go to the GP unless it begins to show sign of infection.

I wouldn't bother - I'd let it bleed a bit to flush anything out, and then wash it under running water. I've had worse dog bites than that and never sought medical attention.

Obviously if it starts to look infected (especially redness that starts tracking up your hand) then get to the doctor pronto.

I went to A&E when I was bit by a dog at 7 week's pregnant. The wound broke the skin. They just cleaned it up with antibacterial wipes and put a large plaster on it and sent me home. I was find afterwards.

Actually NICE guidelines best on clinical review of risks and benefits are that any animal bite that breaks the skin requires antibiotics.
The risk of sepsis from an animal bite is actually very high and it can develop very rapidly hence the guidelines.
