Cocker spaniel eaten 2 onion bhajis.

About 85g of onion.

Vet says see how he goes but I'm panicking a bit.

Do I need to take him to the vet.

I wouldn’t be worried about this personally.
Might have a runny tummy from the spice though!

Motorina · 20/06/2023 21:48

Sounds like you've spoken to the vet? If they're not worried, I wouldn't be. (And I have beagles, so have had my fair share of regrettable eating incidents...)

Brace yourself for a flatulent night is all.

toomuchlaundry · 20/06/2023 21:48

@RunningFromInsanity it’s the onions you have to be careful about, toxic to dogs

Raindropsarefallingheavily · 20/06/2023 21:49

Has your ddog got form for being Dusty Bin?. Between 2 of my ddogs we have 'lost' 5 mince pies in one sitting. A flip flop. And a whole bag of complete ddog food...
Absolute bastards!!

Itsreallyhot · 20/06/2023 22:00

How much does the dog weigh?

0.5% of their weight is considered a toxic dose I think
Some dogs can manage more and some less
If you have any activated charcoal I would ask your vet if they think it's worth giving some to the dog as it helps to absorb the toxins

My idiot dog ate a load of raisins recently and she's absolutely fine now I really hope yours is ok as well

fruitstick · 20/06/2023 22:10

I've spoken to the vet. She has reiterated to just monitor him over the next few days and not to worry too much.

As a puppy, we took him to vets for a packet of hot cross buns, and entire corn on the cob (middle included) and a sealed freezer bag of chicken scraps.

But he's been quite good for a year or so. His insurance premium is due in a few weeks too.

I really wouldn't worry. The vet would say to bring him in if she was concerned.

85g of onion is nothing for a cocker spaniel. Of course it's not ideal but it's not an amount I would worry about!

EllaRaines · 20/06/2023 22:35

One of mine snaffled two takeaway onion bhaji's and was fine. Not even the squits the next day!

I watched over him for the most of the night!

I did mention it in passing when we were at the vets some time later and she said it was raw onion that could be toxic and the process of cooking would minimise the toxicity although eaten in large quantities could still make a dog ill.

RedHelenB · 20/06/2023 22:47

Mine got onion rings as a small puppy but was fine.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 20/06/2023 22:48

I’d be panicking so I feel your pain. One of ours has colitis so I’d also be panicking about the spice and oil…
If the vet isn’t panicking I’d just keep an eye… I’m sure tbeyll be ok

fruitstick · 21/06/2023 08:38

That's all very reassuring, thank you.

He seems fine this morning, although the vet said it might be 2 or 3 days to show any ill effects.

But fingers crossed.

He's done a couple of large, let's say 'sloppy' poos. But other than that full of beans.

I suspect the main consequence of this will be a dog that loves onion bahjis Grin

Usernamenotavailab · 21/06/2023 09:30

Onions are a repeated exposure risk, one off is fine.

if you want a second opinion, this lot are the experts: they mainly consult with vets but have a public information helpline that will tell you whether treatment is needed or not.

Full of beans? Surely full of onions?
And thanks to you op I am making homemade bhajis tomorrow!!
Yummy!
Will lock ddogs out...

gogohmm · 21/06/2023 09:38

From our vet:

Generally speaking, toxicity occurs when a dog ingests more than 0.5% of their body weight in onions at one time.

gogohmm · 21/06/2023 09:40

But mine has eaten all kinds of foods on the banned list to no ill effects. In fact I never heard about the grapes and raisins thing until about 20 years ago, my old dog loved mince pies!

Maddy70 · 21/06/2023 09:47

My dogs always eat onions. Yes I know they're toxic but they love them and retrieve them from the bin if I forget to hide them!

They have always been fine
