Long lasting natural dog chews

OooohItsMee · 19/06/2023 11:46

What can I give my dog as a long lasting chew that he won't try to swallow whole?!

He loves rabbit ears but these are very thin and he just trys to swallow them 😔 he loves pig and goat ears but when they get small enough to fit in his mouth, he tries to swallow these too. Same with bully sticks. I have tried putting them in a holder but he has no interest as he can't throw them around and play with them. He can't have yak chews as they upset his stomach and he bites large chunks off 🤦🏼‍♀️

Deer antlers, he gets bored of and he has had a horn (forget which one) but these splinter.

Any ideas ?!

cow hooves? Not as long lasting as horns but do last. They are a bit smelly

Sounds like you’ve tried lots of things

This site has lots of natural chews really good service and fast delivery

Coffee wood chews are meant to be good too but haven’t tried with ours. They love Yaks and antlers shame they aren’t ok for yours.

Dried ostrich bones.

Trust me on this!

OooohItsMee · 19/06/2023 12:20

@Lastqueenofscotland2 not tried cow hooves, are they OK for a small-medium dog?

@24Dogcuddler that website looks fab, will have a look!

@SirSniffsAlot aren't the ostrich bones quite big?

OP posts:
SirSniffsAlot · 19/06/2023 12:22

They are big (is that a problem?) and very light. They have a honeycomb structure which means they break down safely as the dog chews them and into very small pieces, but still last a good while.

BeansOnToast32 · 19/06/2023 12:46

Another vote for Ostrich bones. Yes they are big, they aren't meant to and couldn't eat it in one sitting.

Mine also like deer legs with the hair still on.

Augustone · 19/06/2023 13:06

My German Shepherd loves a deer leg or filled hoof (sadly smelly so definitely one to eat outside). Also something called a jurassic bone from a brilliant local pet shop. I have no idea what animal it is from but it is huge+

SirSniffsAlot · 19/06/2023 13:09

It'll be ostrich or beef - you can tell by how it chews down. Beef will be much harder, heavier and won't have the honeycomb structure inside.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 19/06/2023 13:14

I’ve got 2 dogs around 12kg if that’s what you’d call small/medium and they love their hooves :)

DancingShinyFlamingo · 19/06/2023 13:14

have you tried kongs instead? We fill our with smash and carrots with a smear of really yummy liver pate dotted through. We then freeze them and it takes the dogs hours to lick them fully clean.

OooohItsMee · 19/06/2023 13:54

Thank you so much! I'll get him some cow hooves to try 😊

He isn't interested in kongs sadly!

I have a pet supplies shop, and we stopped stocking hooves after a customer's doberman pierced their intestine with a piece of hoof (not purchased from us). The dog survived but had traumatic and expensive surgery. Obviously, there is some risk with all chews. We sell olive wood chews which seem popular.

Cow hooves (though they absolutely stink)
Ostrich bones
Deer legs
Braided ostrich
Braided pizzles

biedrona · 19/06/2023 16:58

Yak milk - very expensive though
