Can I register my puppy's microchip somewhere for free? And other questions.

Breeder says I need to go to xyz website but it's £24 to register.

Isn't there somewhere I can do it for free considering it's legally mandated to be chipped?

Also there's so many 'databases' so if my dog went missing and it's scanned does that scanner check all the databases?

Is there like one main database they're all on or would you have to try each individual database/website?

I think you need to register with the manufacturer website, usually identichip

morelippy · 19/06/2023 08:42

Surely your breeder will have registered it to you when it was out in, and your vet will confirm it at puppy checks?

morelippy · 19/06/2023 08:43

Put in

Tubbyinthehottub · 19/06/2023 08:45

The breeder should have microchipped the puppies. Are you sure the breeder isn't advising you to go to a specific site so you can transfer details of ownership rather than register? There shouldn't be a charge for this. The breeder should have given you the chip number.

Mrsjayy · 19/06/2023 08:52

I had to change mine over from breeder to our details I wish the breeder hadn't microchipped we got the pup a week later ..
anyway I paid £12 to change over You have to gp with the manufacturer /company

Yes the puppy is chipped. I have the number.

The website is wetracepets. Com

And it's saying its £23.99 to register my details?

OP posts:
HuxleyPigOinkOink · 19/06/2023 08:56

I think she's had them chipped but not registered her details?

So I'm not transferring ownership but doing the first registration under my own details?

OP posts:
TakeMyStrongHand · 19/06/2023 08:57

I agree that all dogs should be chipped but this law hasn't been thought through. I can't remember how much we paid to get our dogs chipped when the time came but I don't think it was much more than the £23.95 mentioned here. Chip companies are getting paid twice.

TakeMyStrongHand · 19/06/2023 08:59

It's the same in theory for vaccinations. My last pup came with part one of the puppy jabs but as no vet in my area used that brand, we had to pay for jab one again and wait even longer to walk him/have full protection.

HuxleyPigOinkOink · 19/06/2023 09:02

I've just put the number in indentibase and it's not recognised.

The packet says Intrace on it?

Why isn't there a government based free database? It's just stupid.

To be honest if you are quibbling over a small sum to have your dogs chip registered to you you can’t afford a puppy. Have you sat down and worked out the cost of owning and caring for your dog for maybe the next 14 years? The sum is astronomical, £24 is nothing.

It’s like buying a top of the range car and then complaining that screen wash is too expensive.

Tubbyinthehottub · 19/06/2023 09:11

I've paid £15 to transfer long term ownership of a dog (previous owner had died) but not to change puppy breeder details to mine.

If followed instructions and it says £23.99 then I'd just pay so that I could be found if my dog was lost. Dog ownership is expensive.

Yes that's right you need to re register.

Tubbyinthehottub · 19/06/2023 09:13

Tell the breeder you are having problems and ask that she talks you through what you need to do.

MonumentalLentil · 19/06/2023 09:20

They also charge to change address if you move. They charge because they are a business and a pet is not a Government sponsored scheme.

If people can't afford to eat and have to rely on foodbanks, there is no hope of getting your pet paid for, essentials are not given away by the Government, never mind luxuries like pets. Rescues are full of pets that people can no longer afford.

Also you do get help with children which are also not essentials, but are now luxuries in many cases. People can't always afford those but have them anyway.

If it was government run there would still be a fee. It would be "stupid" for it to be free. Should passports, driving licenses be free too?

What is the issue with the small one off (unless you move) fee to register? Relatively speaking it is a tiny fee when it comes to the overall cost of dog ownership.

Oh bore off. I have it. I just begrudge paying it!

I'm sure last pup I got many years ago it was £5 to chip and registration was free so I was just checking if there is a free service before paying the £24 fee.

How on earth does that mena I can't afford a dog? Because I do research and don't blindly pay for things I could get cheaper?

When you get dog insurance do you just pay the first, most expensive premium you see or do you shop around and try and get the best deal?

Same for dog food.

Collars? Leads.?

Dog ownership is expensive so checking your expenses and finding the most savvy option without compromising her safety is surely a good thing??

Then why are you whinging and whining and expecting the government to provide you with a free data base?

😂😂

You're funny.

I was saying if the government expect all dogs to chipped there should be one single database to register and no, you shouldn't have to pay a 2nd time when ymthe breeder has already paid once for the microchipping. So the microchip ping shouldn't be free and the breeders registering the pup shouldn't be free (they profit after all) but the owner shouldn't have to pay a 2nd time.

It's hardly controversial.

Wind your neck in.

OP posts:
OpalescentFly · 19/06/2023 09:53

With both pups we've had, the breeder has put the microchips in our names straight away, the only thing we had to do was set up an account. No money involved

NoTouch · 19/06/2023 10:00

Why should there be one database? Surely with all your research you know who the approved database are and how they interact? And again, why should the government/tax payer pay for any adminstration for pets?

There are free approved databases which google will find you in seconds, there are some who offer free registration to breeders, there are some who offer free ownership transfers. Your breeder chose who to use.

There is now and a charge to transfer ownership from the breeder to the new owner with the KC! I think we paid £3 though not £27.

I agree, I wonder how much the pup cost, the cost of the chip registration will be negligible. Such a strange outlook. Enjoy your pup OP.

I remember having to pay a similar amount when I got my dog and again when I moved.

I do think it would be better if there was one company, more simple anyway. But there isn't. This is the system.

That is like saying it would be better if there was only one gas supplier, or one insurance provider. Why would it be better? More providers means you can shop around for the one that provides a price and services that suit your needs best.

If you just want to register for free and not take any other services there are some that do just that.
