Lilou or Olive? Is it too late to change?

She is 17 weeks old and has been Olive since we got her.

I've gone off Olive - not sure why?! But considering Lilou (lee-loo).

Which do you prefer and is it too late to change her name?

Any suggestions similar to this also welcome.

She's gorgeous! I imagine she could happily learn both names if you start calling her Lilou. Most dogs I know recognise their names and numerous nicknames, I'm sure my dog thinks he is called "darling boy". Lilou is a lovely name!

GameOverBoys · 18/06/2023 20:12

She’s a dog, you can definitely change her name. He’s gorgeous by the way 😊

IsadoraQuagmire · 18/06/2023 20:42

Olive is much nicer.

FeigningConcern · 18/06/2023 20:45

Change it. She won't know any difference. We changed our cat's name a few weeks after we got her as the first one really didn't suit her.

ilovesushi · 18/06/2023 22:27

Change it if you want. I allowed my son to have his way in choosing our dog's name. I was fine with the name but it just didn't suit her. I had another name which suited her looks and personality much more which I really loved. DS lost interest in the dog almost immediately. I dithered about changing the name but then felt I would be confusing the dog if I switched it. I wish I had now. My advice is change it if you feel strongly about it.

Moanycowbag · 18/06/2023 22:53

I would stick with Olive and keep it as her Sunday name but also call her Lilou, my animals tend to end up with 3 or 4 names and respond to all, my current pup is Perseus/Percy/Pickle/Pumkin/Pumpkin Pie/Piccalilli, and my older dog is Hilde/PupPup/Puppadoodle/doods/Doodle Pig

WhatADrabCarpet · 18/06/2023 22:59

She looks like she should be called 'Olive.'

Lilou is a bit pretentious. Sorry.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 18/06/2023 23:02

Lilou is not so far away from Olive that you couldn’t have it as a nickname. Our cute t doogie is nicknamed Party Pants due to his windmill tail when he’s soooo excited about, I dunno, anything? It’s nothing like his actual name though but he still knows we mean him 😁

MandyMotherOfBrian · 18/06/2023 23:03

Current - not Cute t - although he is a cutie!

FunkyBuddha85 · 19/06/2023 00:20

You can call her whatever you like. She'll know you're talking to her by the tone and sound of your voice.
My dog was called Xena, she was a rescue and came with it at 3 years old. I kept it as it suited her but over the years depending on my mood she was called Xenabub, bubsy, bebil and my sister always called her boo-boo! She responded to them all!

tabulahrasa · 19/06/2023 08:00

Dogs don’t care about names, it’s just the noise we make when we want their attention, it’s no different to changing your recall cue from come to here.

But... you’ll at some point have to shout it at a distance in public and I go high pitch when I do that, so personally I’d sound like a twat shouting lilou in a park.

Motorina · 19/06/2023 09:09

Mine respond to, "Oi! Dickheads!".

Change it if you want to, but think seriously about whether you're happy shouting 'Lilou' at a bramblebush. Personally I prefer Olive.

BananaStraw · 19/06/2023 09:14

I like Lilou. I'd shout it at a bramble bush 😂 She's absolutely gorgeous whatever her name is 😍

minipie · 19/06/2023 09:17

What about Livi ? Short for Olive but has a similar feel to Lilou?

Lansonmaid · 19/06/2023 09:24

She is gorgeous, don't mind either name, although Olive does remind me of the character from On the Buses!

We have recently adopted a Border Collie who was called Teddy for over a year which we didn't think was quite right for a BC as they traditionally have one syllable names (plus I tend to associate Teddy with dogs like cockerpoos for some reason)....
He took to his new name in about a week at most, all we did was say his new name immediately after his old one for a couple of days, then gradually dropped the old name. He got a little treat when he came to the new name.

SirSniffsAlot · 19/06/2023 11:49

Two syllable names tend to be best and hard sound consonants tend to be better - easier for the dog to hear and recognise. Bonus points if the name ends with a hard consonant (though my own dog's name doesn't Grin).

That said, Olive may be easier for the dog to distinguish than Lilou. To me, it just sounds that bit more different to 'general talking sounds'.

Never too late to change it.

averythinline · 20/06/2023 12:37

mine responds to muppet/mutley/thicko / aaaaargh bloody dog.... as well as actual name! but we were advised to have at least 1 hard consonant in but cant remember why now....
she is v cute.. so am sure will be fine think its repetition that does it

WetBandits · 20/06/2023 12:40

I prefer Olive but you can change it to Lilou if you want to, but just bear in mind if you’ve already started teaching recall etc., you may need to re-teach her with her new name.

HScully · 20/06/2023 12:42

Olive is much nicer. Not keen on Lilou it sound a bit wet... sorry

cocksstrideintheevening · 20/06/2023 13:40

Olive is nicer.

My dog has his name and then hundreds of nicknames that have evolved. He answers to al of them!
