Washing Vet Bed

How do you wash vet bed and other fleece dog beds?
Probably sounds like a really stupid question.
I've got a raised mesh bed, I put vet bed or a generic fleece bed on top for my old girl.
But whenever I wash them they stink of mouldy washing unless I leave them out on the washing line to air literally until I want to use them.
The other day I changed the bed, it didn't smell but had a bit of sicked up grass on it, the clean one I pulled out of the cupboard smelt so bad I ended up washing it too!
I don't use fabric conditioner on them.
I've tried various temperatures.
I've dried indoors and outdoors.
Washing powder, with a spoonful of soda crystals.
Zoflora in the rinse cycle.
Anti bacterial Calgon in the rinse cycle.
They do dry quick so it's not because they stay damp.
It's a new washing machine but happened with my old one too.
Does anyone else have this pongy problem?
Or anyone know how to solve it please?

I’ve got loads on the line at the moment! Never had an issue with it smelling. Is it the one with the non slip coating on the back? I wonder if it feels superficially dry to the touch but hasn’t dried right through?

Newpeep · 13/06/2023 12:12

I wash it in a horse run bag as it stops the machine clogging with hair and other stuff. I don't have an issue with smell and I used to have an incontinent dog so it was washed frequently!

Newpeep · 13/06/2023 12:13

Are you using bio powder? That's fairly essential for pet bedding. I use it for human washing too but people who don't do tend to use it for animal stuff. I use the cheapest bio powder for that.

Spanielsarepainless · 13/06/2023 12:48

I had this problem then found pet bed wash on Amazon. Game changer. Cupboard where the spare bedding is kept is as fragrant as my airing cupboard.

CMOTDibbler · 13/06/2023 12:51

I always wash mine just with biological powder and they are fine, but they do feel dry to the touch long before they are actually dry ime. I give them a tumble to pick up all the loose hair after they've been on the airer or line and it is amazing what comes out waterwise even if I thought they were dry

CherryogDog · 13/06/2023 13:27

@Newpeep I have horses too, my small horse washing smells really fresh, my horse fleeces retain a slight horse smell, nothing like the stink I get from my dog beds.
And yes it's bio powder.
@Wolfiefan not the non slip type.
I can leave them on the line all day, I popped one that had been out line drying on a laundry rack in my bedroom and had to get up and move it in the middle of the night because it was overpowering.
@Spanielsarepainless I will try the pet bed wash, thanks for suggestion. And making me feel I'm (and my dogs ) not complete mingers 😆
@CMOTDibbler I'll try the tumble drier, thanks.
Added a picture just because they make my heart go squishy 💓

Oh they have such lovely faces!!

CherryogDog · 13/06/2023 13:57

Thanks @Wolfiefan , the old girlie is 16 and a tripod, the terrior is a cheeky boy, but as he's grown up with various lurchers and greyhounds he identifies as a long dog and prefers lounging around to ratting. Although he does love to grind himself into any fox poo if he gets the chance 🤑

I use vet bed for my rabbits and as they seem to adore peeing on it daily, I have daily washes. It definitely dries best outside! And I always use a wash bag to wash them in (I have the added bonus of stray bits of hay as well as fur to tangle the machine). I don't have a tumble dryer.

During the winter I still hang them outside but in their run (it has a solid roof) and bring in to sit near the radiator. It can be a bit musty if it's not taken out the machine immediately after the wash has finished, and I always give it a brush out with a slicker brush while it's still wet too. They definitely smell better drying in the summer though when they dry much quicker - once they've dried there's usually no smell though.

Ylvamoon · 13/06/2023 15:00

Not sure if this is your issue, but I found vet bed can soak up a lot of water so on a normal/ eco setting it's not enough for a good wash.

I usually choose the "extra water" function on my washing machine. Also use plenty of bio washing powder or a good kennel cleaner. That should do the trick!

IngGenius · 13/06/2023 17:46

If it is "true" vet bed it is usually dead easy to wash. You can wash it at very high temperatures so maybe give it a real blast to get any bacteria out of it. Agree always use a biological washing powder

If you give it a quick brush when wet it will look like new when it is dry

Wolfiefan · 13/06/2023 19:05

😱 to the rolling in poo!
@IngGenius cheeky question what sort of brush?
Also the grey vet fleece without the non slip back can be washed at a high temp. The non slip ones can’t.

bunnygeek · 14/06/2023 12:00

@Wolfiefan I use an old slicker brush :)

Wolfiefan · 14/06/2023 13:21

@bunnygeek thanks sooo much. Some of mine are looking a bit old! Hoping to avoid having to replace just yet.

Identifies as a long dog LOL!!!!

A bit of trigene in a cold wash followed by a really hot 90 wash would be what I would try next in your situation.
