Recall training

Having a nightmare with my 15mo golden whose recall is good when no other dogs around but appalling when there are.

Nothing seems to work.

We keep her on lead unless we meeting a friend with a dog as she is then never interested in any other dogs. Or we hire a field.

What has worked for you? Are there any non food related methods you recommend?

Have you tried the book total recall? I swear by it!

Another vote for the Pippa Mattinson book, total recall.

I reward the dog wanting to be with me rather than recall. So every time the dog looks at me it’s a ‘yesssssss!’ Then treats. You build this up from a boring environment to a more stimulating one over time. Onlead when you know recall will be sketchy.

Engage disengage is also really good for helping them focus on you and not the dog. It’s not just for fear. It’s for general focus too.

Ive got a working terrier - they need to see you are more rewarding than the environment. Last dog was a hound cross terrier. Same. Your gun dog will be similar. You need to be more valuable than the environment.

Total Recall!

Read the books Total Recall by Pippa Mattinson + Mission Control by Jane Arden. If you follow the advice you will learn how to get a solid recall.

Another vote for total recall book
For a terrier owner I'm amazed at how good my dogs recall is compared to other dogs I know
But we work on it all the time to reinforce the training
