Advice please for itchy pup

Morning all,

I'm fostering a dog for the weekend. Pretty sure she's a Yorkie X. She's come from a very stressful home life and we think is in her later years.

She's booked in today for a good clip and to have her nails done, groomer is also going to give her an 'itchy skin bath'.

Obviously I'm not a regular foster home, this was an emergency at work and I was the only person able to take her due to having a garden and not having another dog at home.

She's a very sweet, well tempered little thing. Very cuddly and calm.

However, she is so itchy! No signs of fleas, but she has big sore scabby patches and bald bits where she has knawed herself. Especially on her feet and down her spine. Her ears are clean and no other signs of illness. Eating/ drinking ok.

I'm more than likely going to see if my vet (cat is having his jabs today) would quickly assess her too.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on what it might be or how we could help alleviate the itching for her as she must be so uncomfortable 😣

She really does need to see the vet, sounds like mites or similar. Or it could be her food, allergies.

My dog was allergic to everything (including rice which is in most of the wheat free dog foods).
She needed an allergy test, special diet and daily anti-histamines to keep her comfortable.

Thanks all, managed to get emergency vet app. She's had some steroids and a medication bath and seems better so far so fingers crossed it continues!

That’s good.

My dog went through this, it was really distressing for me as we tried loads of things to calm her itching down but nothing worked. Eventually we realised it only happened in the summer so must be some sort of allergies. Every May/June when she starts itching we take her to the vets to get a shot of Cytopoint and this immediately stops it for the whole summer so she only needs one a year

My cat (and dog mentioned above) both had/have allergies. In the end a daily dose of Apoquel sorted them both out. The steroids worked for a few days but weren't long lasting.

Thanks all, she's on about tablet number 4 so far and definitely scratching so much less! The patches already look less 'angry' so fingers crossed that it stays that way

Might ask for that if the steroids stop working

our dog used to get this when his anal glands got blocked. not sure if it was dietary related but the vet had to squeeze them out, super unpleasant!

watching with interest as my poodle is an itchy dog. She is on a daily apoquil pill which does help but doesn’t totally stop the itching. I’m wondering if I should take her for a full allergy test.

Our dog was allergic to beef, wheat, rice, soy, peas and corn. Managed to find some meals at Butternut Box which were ok for her.

Massive chicken allergies in my girl. Apparently the most common protein to be allergic to. She also can’t have beef!

Jenniferturkington · 15/06/2023 08:16

Yes, my girl is allergic to all poultry. Beef and lamb ok though.

I second cytopoint, my terrier had horrendous hay-fever itching and within 48 hours of this injection he was perfect. Well worth the money
