Renal failure and raisins

DDog ate raisins about 70 hours ago now

When do you stop worrying about renal failure?

She's had activated charcoal and is completely fine in herself no loose stool no difference in urine production no loss of appetite and a small uptake in water but its very hot here and she's mostly just sticking her head in a bucket to bite the bubbles

After this amount of time I think you can assume they’re OK. My understanding is that many dogs do not react to raisins or grapes at all, but the ones that do will show symptoms of toxic poisoning after 12-24 hours but possibly longer. I’d think 70+ hours is well outside so OK.

When my dog has eaten raisins (one tea cake, one expensive out of hours mince pie) the vet has always made them vomit ASAP, because you can’t know if they’ll react but if they do it’s very hard to treat them. So we’ve always taken the expensive but cautious route. Activated charcoal won’t have had any effect, I don’t think, for grapes/raisins.

Sure one of vets on here will know but imagine a blood test would reveal if it's has caused damage to kidneys as they can lose a lot of function before any symptom will show.

Hopefully your dog is one that isn't affected. My friends dog ate load of raisins she had in a cupboard she thought was out of reach and dog was in hospital for a couple of weeks. He's been ok for years since but has homecooked renal diet & regular blood/urine tests to keep an eye on it.

Has she seen a vet? My dog had a blood test after a week, I think I it was.

Itsreallyhot · 10/06/2023 16:04

No she's not been to the vets, where we live vets are like gold dust and while we are registered with one they can't fit her in for a few weeks as she isn't an emergency case as she's fine in herself
The wait list to get on a vets books here is almost a year

She was given the charcoal on advise of my insurances emergency phone vet but they can only advise but not give appointments

A previous family dog when I was a child ate an entire Christmas pud to himself and was fine. He hid the remains in the garden so not found for weeks so I'm hoping and praying she is as lucky as he was

Sorry to hear your dog got hold of raisins, I have a little pug and although he’s not got hold of raisins he is a terror for trying to grab food.

I did a little search to try and get more information. The study mentioned on the screenshot is quite old but mentions that although it is hard to tell what proportion of dogs could be harmed by eating raisins, in the study only 37% had symptoms. (So more didn’t)
And for those that did, it seems to say symptoms likely within 6-12 hours.

so after 4 days I’d take that as positive for your dog.

That’s awful that your vets don’t count it as an emergency. My dog ate chocolate raisins from a bag someone dropped at the park and they saw him immediately and he was given fluids and charcoal and spent about 8 hours being observed. He was completely fine but I think it should be treated with the potential of being an emergency.

Can the vets at least advise over the phone?

Nomorecoconutboosts · 11/06/2023 16:46

How is ddog today?

Itsreallyhot · 11/06/2023 22:10

She's a little nutcase today and has decided to chew up the sofa cables so it can no longer recline
Unless its a toilet roll or a flip flop she has never destroyed anything like that before

I have been very worried about walking her too much in this heat after the raisins so she's been on minimal walks and she's showing her displeasure but I will slowly start upping her back to normal levels again

Took her out with Dd2 earlier and she was great but did get tired quickly which I am putting down to the heat and that she's not been out other than to potter around the block since Tuesday

The vets around here are so full it's a joke they do their best but all the lock down pets put a strain on them and now alot of locals are breeding the pets they got.

Sim still monitoring her urine input output as best I can but think she's going to be fine now though I do worry about long term issues with her kidneys
