Dog food in France

SurreyisSunny · 04/06/2023 17:05

We are taking our puppy to a France in September on holiday. He’ll be 7 months old.

My concern is buying dog food and probably more importantly treats that he’ll like in France fairly quickly when we come off the euro tunnel.

Any experience of this? Pet shop or supermarket?

Recommendations for vegan treats also appreciated as think we can take these with us.

@Okki yes I’d not even thought about it

are you getting the rabies jab in France then?

Yes - dog has EU passport, so we want to keep it going, hence taking him over for rabies jab, as is much cheaper in the long run than having to get the British travel document. We take him over about twice a year (with dog food Grin).

As you can see from the attached link, 2kg of prescription pet food only.

Fish based food should be ok as you can take fish. It's a pain in the bum- we prefer to travel overnight and there would be a canine riot if no breakfast was forthcoming when we get off the boat!

I've not seen anyone searched for food, but have heard about people who have been stopped and made to throw things away. There is the possibility of big fines and bans from entering the EU.
It is the law, and although there are not speed cameras on every corner, you wouldn't condone speeding.

Sooner or later the rules will be enforced and I wouldn't want to have to explain the presence of 20kg of illicit meat products to a grumpy customs officer at 05.30 in the rain ...

Check on the supermarket websites for what is commonly available and get your dog used to that, is my advice.

If you can receive something where you are going in France zooplus have just about every brand. Prices are OK too, and delivery is very quick.

@emotionalpuddle unfortunately no meat or dairy products allowed since 2021. I was planning on talking a picnic for our lunch but that’s not an option either!

Oops 😬 we last went December 2022 and took everything with us as usual, we took the tunnel.. something to remember next time!
