Tell me about your 1 year olds

So I'm fostering a dog, he's 12/13 months and my first 'teenage' dog - he's 35kg of puppy!

I've had him a week, he's VERY humpy, pulls like a train (pulled me over a few times), whines permanently, eats whatever poo he can find, thinks hands are for chewing and generally lacks manners..

Standard puppy?

Please tell me yours were the same and there's hope! He's absolutely gorgeous and doesn't have a bad bone or ounce of aggression, I do think it's purely that he's had very little love and training.

Any tips? Help!

Like you say, all of that behaviour is due to lack of training + lack of boundaries in the early months. It will obviously take longer now he is 1 but it is still very achievable.
My tip would be go to a professional trainer and get regular ie weekly lessons. When I say trainer I mean a breed specific trainer who understands the challenges of that breed and can give you a toolbox of techniques to use.
At home decide what behaviour you want and reward that, ignore unwanted behaviour, but you have to be strict with yourself and consistent with everything.

I'm a bit tied because I can't afford a behaviourist; as I say, I'm just fostering him via a very small local charity!

But I can definitely be consistent and have lots of time for him - when he's mouthing I immediately replace with a chew (antlers, horns etc) and when he's super intent on humping I remove myself.

With the lead pulling, I reward when he's loose lead and can already see an improvement.

What's the best thing to do when he's whining continually and barking at me?

What's the best thing to do when he's whining continually and barking at me?

Ignore/walk away and only reward when he's quiet. Won't the charity offer training support?

They're a bit limited to be honest funds wise but also a little stuck in the old 'alpha dog' theory.

I believe in reward, positive based training.

They're a lovely little charity with their hearts in the right place!

I have a 13 month old, been with us from 4 months.

She is better mannered than you describe, but definitely not perfect! I am guilty of not training her as much as I could have done, but it's an ongoing process.

For reference my DDog

  • Eats poo if I don't say 'leave it' in time. Mostly manages to leave it if I've asked her to.
  • Has decent recall if there are no other dogs in sight. Has almost zero recall if other dogs involved. This is the main pita behaviour I am working on.
  • Is fairly reliable on commands like sit/wait/stop. Is learning to sit at a distance.
  • is getting better at walking past distractions on lead - e.g. Can sometimes walk past another dog without attempting to interact, can walk past sheep or horses at the fence. Often still likes a good look at these things, but no longer leaping towards them etc.
  • doesn't mouth/bite, doesn't whine much

We live quite rurally & thus get loads of off-lead time in forest, hill, etc. In town or a busy town park she needs to be on lead.
