Help needed: poodle with a yellow poo problem

HavfrueDenizKisi · 31/05/2023 19:10

I have a mini poodle who is nearly 3. She's usually fed a mix of kibble and wet food which she eats happily.

Anyway about 3 weeks ago she had a few days of diarrhoea - yellow and formed but extremely soft. Exciting subject this! Well done if you've got this far. So I popped her onto poached chicken and rice. Things improved so I went back to normal food and the next day we were back to square one. So obviously we made our first trip to the vets. Examination came back fine. Vet suspected colitis and put her on pro-bind (doggy probiotics) for 5 days plus to stay on chicken and rice.

So we're now three weeks into this. She's still on chicken and rice and we went back to the vets for another round of the probiotics.

She's been wormed and I've seen no evidence of wrigglers in her poo. She is always walked on lead so she hasn't snaffled anything untoward. Currently no treats etc given to her. She's fine in herself. Sleeping well, has energy to walk, run and play; eating and drinking fine and happy to be picked up, belly rubbed etc.

I've emailed the vets asking for advice but not heard back yet so will be calling for an appointment tomorrow with them.

What should I be asking them to do? Can colitis last for ages like this? I don't think she has liver or pancreas issues as she has no other symptoms and is her normal self.

How long can I keep giving her chicken and rice (have to cook fresh rice twice a day because she's a fussy bugger who won't eat cold rice 🙄)?

Anyone else have experience of this and any words of wisdom?

Congratulations: you've reached the end of OP. 🎉

Yes there is some dog illness beginning with c i can’t remember what it’s called. Gives these symptoms our dog had to have stool samples and two rounds of meds then been fine

Thoughtswelcomeplease · 31/05/2023 19:41

Oh sorry re read and see you had the food for that. …. My dog had meds from vets for that x

VioletCharlotte · 31/05/2023 20:00

Does she still have diarrhoea? Chicken makes their poo yellow, so if she's fine in herself then it could be that. My dog had this recently, try gradually reintroducing her normal food and decreasing the chicken. A good probiotic will help too, I use pro-kalin which comes as a paste for my dog.

EugeneEufy · 31/05/2023 20:11

My dog recently had very bad diarrhoea but well in herself as yours sounds. Apart from the diarrhoea, she was behaving completely normally and eating well. I gave her probiotic paste and pure tripe for a few days.

IngGenius · 31/05/2023 20:14

I would want a blood test and a stool sample test from the vets as it is an ongoing issue.

Dont do it without checking with your vet but potatoes can be a replacement for rice in some instances and white fish for the chicken

HavfrueDenizKisi · 31/05/2023 20:15

@VioletCharlotte her poo was normal consistency this morning but soft again this afternoon. I'm a pro a dog poo photos on my phone now too 🤦🏼‍♀️.

I've done two rounds of the probiotic paste already. Should I continue with that do you think?

Was wondering if the chicken would make the poo paler. Will try and re-introduce her normal food slowly.

Thanks @IngGenius might try that combo.

Chicken is a very common allergen and some dogs don't develop any issues until later in life - so it could be that the bland diet is actually making things worse.

If her poo is normal in the morning and soft at night, that can be down to over feeding. Are you measuring all her food and making sure she's being the fed the correct amount for her breed (which won't be much!).

I can always tell if my beagle has been scrounging extra treats off people as he always gets soft poo afterwards 🙈

Gallathea · 31/05/2023 22:15

I wouldn't stress too much while you wait to hear from the vets. Don't know if you've had poodles before but they're prone to sensitive tummies (and can be notoriously fussy eaters - even my cats are less picky).

My poodle has his kibble varied daily to accommodate poo fluctuations- sometimes needs a bit more, sometimes a bit less

HavfrueDenizKisi · 01/06/2023 07:55

@coffeecupsandwaxmelts thanks. Yes I was measuring her food pre poo issues - she had 100g of wet and 20g of dry twice a day and poo was fine. It's a bit harder to measure out the chicken and rice option.

I popped a bit of kibble into her rice last night and reduced the chicken so guess it's a waiting game.

@Gallathea yes they are fussy. It took ages to get to a combination of food she actually would eat - hence the wet dry mix normally.

Again. Thanks for the responses.

I would replace the chicken with poached white fish. My dog turned out to be sensitive to chicken.

I was going to come on to say the same thing.

Might be worthwhile trying her on less food to see if that helps.

If you're going by the amount advised on the packet it's usually far too much, especially for a mini dog.

I had the same thing with my 5.7 kilo dog. Cutting down on the amount of food I was feeding her cured the problem.

BeansOnToast32 · 01/06/2023 21:17

My pup was spayed a few weeks ago and the surgery/medication gave her a really bad tummy. I started her on pro kolin and fed her chicken and rice and the diarrhoea stopped but she ended up with bright yellow poos that were softer than usual, I was pretty alarmed until I Googled and found out chicken and rice could be the cause of the yellow poo. As soon as I started introducing her biscuits again her poo firmed up and went back to a normal colour.

StillMedusa · 01/06/2023 22:54

Chicken gives my dog alarming yellow poo... I bet it's the chicken.
An awful lot of dogs (inc mine) are sensitive to chicken...we now avoid all kibble with chicken in it!

HavfrueDenizKisi · 02/06/2023 06:59

Well annoyingly, the vets haven't bothered to reply however I think many of you have confirmed what was in the back of my mind regarding the chicken.

I've reduced chicken and still giving rice but adding her kibble in increments and yesterday was a better poo day, firmness was normal and colour improved.

Also I've noticed she's been more itchy, paw chewing and licking mouth and nose more, which upon reading about chicken intolerance, can also be symptoms.

Anyway her normal kibble does contain chicken so will have to investigate a different one. Any good suggestions?

Thanks for all responses. Photo of the pupper...
