Neighbour’s dog - help

Our neighbour has very large dogs that bark constantly when outdoors. They fly up to out fence and our own dog has become reactive and very nervous. We’re working on this but it will have limited impact while the other dogs’ behaviour continues. Council has been pretty rubbish and discussing it with the neighbour is not an option. Does anyone have any ideas? Wondered about one of the anti-bark sound emitters but they seem to have mixed results/reviews.

Hi there

I have the same issue and it's driving me insane. It's being going on for months and on confronting the neighbour and reporting it to the council he got aggressive 😢 have you found an anti barking device that works? The one I ordered on amazon was rubbish..

These items will backfire. They're aversive - that's the only way they can possibly 'work' - so are designed to do something unpleasant every time a dog barks, in the hope that they won't bark so often.

Unfortunately your dog is going to hear it even more clearly than the other dogs, and it will mean your dog associates hearing other dogs bark with something unpleasant happening. It's only going to make his reactivity worse.

Could you fence off the fence line that joins with your neighbours? So making a buffer type area so they can’t be directly either side of the fence to each other - if that makes sense? It might help with your dogs nervousness as the gap between them would be greater.

Or could you fence off a small area as far away from the shared fence as possible for your dog to use and focus on training to focus on you and not the barking dogs / desensitisation training? (If your garden is big enough etc)

Do the neighbours dogs have times when they are less likely to be outdoors so that you could do more work in your garden, and then avoid using it as much when they are out there? It’s not ideal to try to use your garden when they aren’t out in theirs but if they are not flexible / accommodating or approachable then it might be a way of helping your wee dog cope.
