In what order did you train your dog?

I have an (almost) 4 month old Cavapoo who is lovely.

She has grasped "sit" but that's about it so far. Not cracked house training yet.

In what order did you teach your pup commands, and how long did it take for them to get it?

I guess it depends on the breed but house training was always the first step for us and that's why we always had summer puppies.

I wouldn't concentrate on much else until you crack this one once and for all and it's done.
Every single time, out in the garden etc etc, you need to be very very very consistent. And it should work within a month at most of bringing puppy home. Without any regression.

The rest was sit, heel (this one takes longest for me so it's constant training for a few months), then introduce down, stop, wait and jump.

And absolutely you must teach no jumping on people.

Once these are mastered you play with the irrelevant but funny ones like paw, spin, roll over etc.

By the age of 6 months I expect my own dogs to know the above, then a regression of 3 months when they are distracted all the time (hard work so keep on top of it at all times) then by 12 months old they would know all of them properly.

But obviously some dogs are easier than others. Just be consistent and make sure you both enjoy the process.

Agree that I'd concentrate on house training first. We were fortunate that our pup arrived pretty much house trained so the first things we moved on to was teaching her her name and 'come'

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 28/05/2023 13:54

House training, jumping up, mouthing and recall were the early essentials for us.

But we got ours at 12 weeks and he came partially toilet trained and already knowing sit, lie down, come and paw.

Branster · 28/05/2023 13:58

True! I forgot recall of all things. First one after toilet training and constant.

Between a 4 and 6 months I think it's the most receptive age for training. So you are at the perfect time now OP.

toilet

gentle

then sit

then stay

then no

then leave it

then down

bed was early too as was wait

commands were daily and 6 months they knew all the above

House training. I virtually don’t bother with anything else until that’s done. Especially if they are slower learners.

twistyizzy · 28/05/2023 14:50

8 weeks old: introduce Toilet training + recall
9 weeks old: intriduce heel off the lead + the show pup the lead (obviously still working on toilet + recall) + fun retrieves
10 weeks old: introduce flitting to build up to being left alone + heeling whilst on the lead

By 12 weeks fully toilet trained, able to walk to heel on + off lead, can be left 20 mins on own with no separation anxiety and the basics of recall

I never teach sit as I use mimic training.

twistyizzy · 28/05/2023 14:52

Oh also to add I never take pup on walks outside house until they are 16 weeks to ensure that heel + lead work are fully formed. If they can't do it reliably in the garden at home then you don't stand a chance outside with all the distractions.
Start gundog puppy classes at 20 weeks and breed specific gundog training at 8 months old.

  1. toilet training. Got my little guy at 8 weeks and he cracked it within a week. Sure there were still a couple of little accidents but he knew where to go and what do to.

We then did a 6 week puppy class where he learnt, sit, stay, go to bed, and basic leash walking. Practiced this all at home outside of school.

My second dog was harder, she's a huskie and they are notoriously stubborn. Process took a few months longer for her.

IngGenius · 28/05/2023 15:17

First week

React to name
Intro to Recall - via game training
Eye focus
Touch
Obviously toilet training

Using the puppies food allowance for all of the above no formal training sessions.

IngGenius · 28/05/2023 15:20

Week 2
Informal side feeding for loose lead walking
more recall games
Calm and settle
Go to bed
Very short waits

I never ever teach a leave it usually a good recall / eye focus is enough

I got an adult rescue that was totally untrained apart from being house broken.

Honestly? I dealt with whatever was most annoying at that time. We mastered recall long before we mastered lie down...
