Annual Vaccinations - yes or no ?

When I was looking for a puppy a couple of years ago I came across a breeder who was anti-vax other then the first course.
She sent me loads of information and FB group links and basically filled me with scare stories.
I have since acquired 2 puppies and have done the first year jabs - what would you suggest regarding the annual boosters ?

I have done these religiously with previous dogs but now I’m not sure what to do for the best.

I think most people just go for their 'yearly boosters' not really paying attention to what is given thinking they are getting all of them yearly when it probably only the Lepto one with the others every three years as per the recommendations.

Sorry but in real life most vets are not following the vaccination guidelines set out by the vaccine manufacturers. And starting again from scratch... nope. Again, incorrect advice from a vet. You don';t have to simply believe me. I posted a link and that links to the actual guidelines. Have a read. I am not some looney.

Actually I work in a vets and have worked in multiple and can’t think of any practice which isn’t following the guidelines of core vaccines DHP every 3 years and leptospirosis every year - and we see clinical cases of lepto in unvaccinated dogs and believe me it isn’t as easy as just give some antibiotics to treat. Most have died and if not they have long expensive hospital stays with risks to all humans handling them. One of my friends caught leptospirosis assumed from her work as a vet and spent 3 weeks in ICU..

I have a cat but similar thing. My vet told me cat boosters are only needed every 2/3 years. But for a cattery they require annual boosters, so she gets them. I also like the fact she gets checked over annually as she is aging

@DforDogWoof the article you have linked to has one massive incorrect piece of information in it. In the Uk lepto is a core vaccination, this vaccine only protects for a maximum of 15 months hence why UK recommendations are yearly vaccines.
The standard protocol is all diseases as puppy, all disease year 1, just lepto years 2 and 3, all diseases year 4 and repeat.
Lepto is endemic in the UK and all dogs are exposed regardless of lifestyle. Hence why it is a core vaccine.
There is no reliable titre testing for lepto either.
Whilst less readable the actual WSAVAA* owner guidelines are a far better link.

That is exactly the link that was used and also given in the article so people could reference it themselves if they wish to. If you prefer to read the full report then that is fine :-)

We had our boys vaccinated annually, which also meant he had a general check up too, as he was a healthy boy until 2 days before passing, we never had any reason for a general check up so the vaccination appointments meant we knew his was healthy with teeth, weight etc.

cryinglaughing · 28/05/2023 15:25

One of mine is fully vaccinated, apart from KC.
The other is terrified of the vet and needs to be sedated to even be examined. He had his puppy vaccs, his first annual booster and nothing else. It is not fair on him or the vet to put him through it, he is coming up 14, so not long left for this world.

DforDogWoof · 28/05/2023 17:22

Any dog who is not in the best of health or who is old shouldn't receive a booster vaccination anyway.

As a scientist it always pays to read the full briefing rather than someone's incorrect interpretation of it.

lol, OK 🤗

Sitdowncupoftea · 31/05/2023 13:29

Definitely get vaccines . The breeder can't have been a decent breeder to recommend otherwise. Parvo is rife now.
